Porsche has also shown a revolutionary wireless charging system for its future all-electric Cayenne at the IAA Mobility in Munich. The luxury car maker demonstrated an 11kW inductive charger system that does not have cables and plugs; a vehicle driver can just park above a charging pad. This new technology is a milestone contribution to the comfort of electric vehicles, and Porsche can become one of the first companies to introduce the system of wireless charging of electric vehicles.
Revolutionary wireless charging technology debuts
Porsche today showed off two of its new products at the IAA in Munich. The long-awaited Cayenne EV showed up with a new trick: an 11kW induction charger, according to Electrek. Details are still a little sparse at the moment, but it looks like a forthcoming Cayenne, which we hope to get a better look at later this month, will have 11kW wireless charging capability.
Also new: the Cayenne will DC charge at up to 400kW, one of the fastest charging cars we’ve seen outside of China. But back to induction chargingโฆ Porsche’s press release didn’t mention the type of induction charging, whether it would be compatible with other types of inductive chargers, or whether this was something that would come on other Porsches, wider VW vehicles, or even across the industry.
Convenient one-box charging solution
“Ease of use, suitability for everyday use, and charging infrastructure are still the decisive factors when it comes to the acceptance of electric mobility,” says Porsche Board Member for Development Michael Steiner, according to Porsche Newsroom. “We are proud that inductive charging will soon be available in series production at Porsche. Charging an electric car at home has never been so easy and convenient.”
For those customers wishing to take advantage of inductive charging at home, the new Cayenne Electric will be the first model that can be ordered with an optional Porsche Wireless Charging receiver unit located in the underbody of the vehicle between the front wheels. Porsche will be the first car manufacturer to bring an 11 kW charging systemย with a “one-box” base plate for battery-electric vehicles to markets.
Advanced positioning and safety features
One-Box means that all components, aside from the supply cable, are contained within the floor plate – there is no need to install a wall box or control unit. To initiate the charging process, the Cayenne only has to be parked above the floor plate. The contactless transfer of energy between the two charging units takes place over a distance of roughly four to six inches.
The mechanism works by showing the charger on the front-view display. The driver must align the car to a certain place on the front of the car. Once over the spot, the car will lower itself to within 4-6 inches of the charging pad. To make this possible, theย Cayenne reduces the rideย height automatically.
Comprehensive safety and efficiency measures
The base plate has a motion detector and foreign object detection. The charging process is automatically interrupted if interference is detected. At 240V, the 11kW Inductive charger would have a ~46A load. Porsche says the unit is up to 90% efficient, which means that the draw would be at least 12.2kW, which is about a 48A load at 240V.
The wireless charging technology introduced by Porsche is a great breakthrough in the convenience of electric cars and user-friendliness. The system is 11kW inductive, which shows no charging cables and still has excellent efficiency and safety levels. Since the Cayenne Electric is scheduled to debut in the world at the end of 2025, this technology can change how customers engage with electric vehicles, making the home charging process as easy as a garage.
