The United Nations is currently preparing its 80th anniversary summit, and Taiwan is expanding efforts to assert its presence on the global stage despite its previous exclusion from the UN system. The Taiwan United Nations Alliance (TAIUNA), in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is leading a series of initiatives aimed at raising awareness and support for Taiwanโs inclusion this year.
Cultural diplomacy takes center stage in New York
TAIUNA will host a cultural showcase event at the UN Plaza in New York this Friday, 12 September 2025. The event is strategically timed to coincide with the opening of the United Nations General Assembly. The event will feature traditional dance performers and exhibitions that will highlight Taiwanโs cultural distinctiveness in hopes of drawing attention to Taiwanโs ongoing diplomatic struggles.
TAIUNA will join the โKeep Taiwan Freeโ parade the following day, which will be organized by the Taiwanese-American community. These community-led initiatives are part of a broader campaign to challenge the narrative surrounding UN Resolution 2758, which is cited as the reason for Taiwanโs exclusion.
Minister Linโs global message: Taiwanโs role in a changing world
Lin Chia-lung, the minister of Foreign Affairs, has been vocal in addressing what he calls Chinaโs โdistortionโ of the resolution. To debunk Chinaโs claims and promote Taiwanโs case for constructive engagement, the ministry has instructed overseas missions to strengthen its case.
โSince 1949, the Peopleโs Republic of China has never ruled Taiwan. UN Resolution 2758 does not mention Taiwan at all.โ
Lin stressed Taiwanโs critical role in the Asia-Pacific region as well as its contributions to global stability in a separate think piece published in the Chosun Ilbo. The commentary also highlights the nationโs robust semiconductor industry and commitment to constitutional values
โTaiwan is a vital member and indispensable partner.โ
Taiwan remains excluded from the UN systemโa situation Lin attributes to Chinaโs โmalicious distortionโ despite the contributions of Resolution 2758 and its relationship to the โOne-China Principle.โ Lin argues that the resolution only addresses the presence of China and does not grant Beijing jurisdiction over Taiwan.
Strategic partnerships and the PIPP initiative
In order to enhance its global standing, Taiwanโs foreign policy strategy now incorporates diplomacy, defense, and technology. The Ministry is also working on advancing the Partnership for International Partnership and Prosperity (PIPP) initiative, which includes collaborations with Paraguay on healthcare systems, Eswatini on energy security, and Palau on sustainable development.
The timing of Taiwanโs new drive is significant. As the UN celebrates its 80th anniversary and steadily approaches the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, Taiwan is calling for its rightful place in the international community.
ย โNow is the opportune moment to embrace Taiwan. And for the values and contributions it can offer to be fully accepted.โ
Growing support from democratic nations
Several democratic nations have shown support for Taiwanโs campaign, and legislatures and administrations around the globe have declared that Resolution 2758 does not determine Taiwanโs status or exclude it from participating in international organizations and forums, such as the G7 Summit, which have also emphasized the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
A few new UN-related proposals are expected to be announced later this week by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. These proposals will assist in further solidifying Taiwanโs diplomatic stance, which remains the guiding principle behind these concentrated efforts.
โBringing Taiwan to the world and the world to Taiwan.โ
As global tensions continue to rise and control from the top is spreading, Taiwanโs message remains clear. Taiwan seeks peace, cooperation, and recognition, not conflict. By taking advantage of cultural diplomacy, strategic partnerships, and international advocacy, Taiwan is making its case for inclusion louder than ever before.
