Since we are living in the fourth industrial revolution, where technology is becoming more and more prominent, Walmart is focused on becoming more artificial intelligence (AI) driven. This retail giant is changing the way consumers are used to shopping. It recently made a new change which will impact the way consumers can do their shopping. The retailer went into partnership with OpenAI, which means consumers will soon be able to buy products directly from ChatGPT.

Details about this change

It came to the point where Walmart teamed up with OpenAI to allow purchases to occur directly in ChatGPT. On Tuesday, the retail giant went into a deal with OpenAI to allow consumers to make faster purchases directly through artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot ChatGPT. With this specific move, the retail giant and the largest United States grocer is trying to keep up with changes in how consumers discover products to buy.

Since many consumers discover products online, it is just fact to use the online platform to help consumers receive their products online as well. Along with purchasing the products consumers see on social media or products recommended by retailers, they are now increasingly going to ChatGPT or similar AI chatbots for gift ideas or help finding the best deals.

Walmart’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Doug McMillon made a statement in a news release. He stated that, “For many years now, eCommerce shopping experiences have consisted of a search bar and a long list of item responses. That is about to change.” Now, the AI feature will be multi-media, personalised and contextual as he further stated.

The CEO added that the retail giant is focused on move towards a more enjoyable and convenient future. By doing this, Walmart decision to make this move to partner with OpenAI to invest in ecommerce and being future focused. It has been stated that the company did not specify when consumers would be able to start buying Walmart products on ChatGPT. Also, it is important to note that the shares of Walmart rose nearly 5% on Tuesday, reaching a 52-week high.

The partnership with OpenAI

In late September 2025, OpenAI first made an announcement about the Instant Checkout feature. Indicating that it will soon allow consumers to purchase products through Walmart. It also stated that it would initially support single-item purchases from Etsy sellers. OpenAI stated at the time that more than one million Shopify merchants, which include Skims and Glossier, would be coming soon.

In addition, the Instant Checkout feature can be seen as a new moneymaker for OpenAI. Walmart did not disclose any financial terms of the deal, however, OpenAI has previously stated that it will charge companies a fee for transactions completed through ChatGPT. Along with the OpenAI deal, Walmart has an artificial intelligence powered shopping assistant on its company app which is called Sparky.
