Christmas is coming to Costco — 5 top-festive items in the “What’s New?” aisle

Recent research has uncovered that 58% of Americans are having to increase the amount spent on groceries this year compared to last year. The irony of this is astounding when you consider former President Donald Trump’s initial promise to bring down food prices from day one if he were elected to office. This claim likely garnered a fair number of votes for the Republican Party and now, a mere month into Trump’s presidency, consumers are facing price increases and inflation rates that seem to be growing exponentially.

The issue of DEI policies is also severely impacting the retail sector, with many companies caving to pressure from the political right wing to cut out any and all DEI practices within their companies. Retailers like Walmart and Target have both given in to these pressures, and as a result, these big-box giants might just lose their positions at the top of the industry if consumers and shareholders do not see any change and boycotts persist.

Where does this leave consumers and their day-to-day grocery needs? Shoppers with a WinCo Foods near them should seriously consider this bulk retailer that could absolutely compete with the likes of warehouse giant Costco in terms of business model and pricing.

Goodbye Walmart and Target, Hello WinCo Foods

WinCo Foods arguably has one of the most unique business models in the industry today due to the fact that the majority of the company’s ownership is held by its very own employees. Both current and former employees own the company through an employee stock ownership plan.

WinCo Foods, which derives its name from a portmanteau of “winning company,” is a warehouse-style retailer with over one hundred locations and six distribution centers spanning the United States. An obvious competitor to WinCo would be Costco Warehouses, a chain retailer that also offers a warehouse-style shopping experience. However, what makes WinCo Foods stand out in our books (aside from competitively low price points) is that, unlike Costco, anyone can shop at WinCo since there is no membership requirement.

WinCo’s business approach is to save money at a company level to pass those savings on to its customers. One of the ways in which they do this is by purchasing inventory directly from farmers and manufacturers to further the company’s “no-frills” operational system.

Another cost-cutting method employed by the company is a no-bagging policy. While this may sound like an inconvenience, the money saved from not employing baggers aids the company in providing lower prices for its offerings.

Shoppers who use credit cards should also ensure they have cash on hand when shopping at WinCo Foods because the warehouse retailer does not accept credit cards as a form of payment. The reason behind this is to save on the cost of transaction fees. Debit cards and government welfare cards are accepted, however.

Favorite Picks When Shopping at WinCo Foods

Much like the Costco experience, shopping at a warehouse-style WinCo Foods store means buying in bulk to maximize savings while simultaneously ensuring your pantry remains stocked to the brim.

Some of our favorite picks to look out for when shopping at a WinCo Foods store include:

  • Beans
  • Rice
  • Pasta
  • Baking supplies
  • Spices
  • Cereals

All of these items boast lengthy shelf lives, and as such, shoppers can take advantage of the lower price points offered on these bulk items. Cheap and long-lasting is the golden ratio for grocery shopping, and it is a combination shoppers are looking for, especially during these times when, according to Ramsey Solutions, “grocery shopping was the number one budget category where Americans said they’re most likely to overspend.”
