Christmas is coming to Costco — 5 top-festive items in the “What’s New?” aisle

The grocery store landscape as we know it is rapidly changing it appears. Supermarkets we once thought were the top in the industry are no longer as popular, whilst unassuming retailers are gaining massive traction. The proof of this is in the pudding, particularly when you consider how companies, like Walmart, for example, have had to close down a substantial number of stores due to underperformance in the past year despite being one of the more well known grocery chains.

Recent Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion policy controversies amongst retailers and impending boycotts have consumers exercising extra caution when deciding where to shop. However, it is not just a political aspect that contributes to the choice of grocer for consumers. With the steadily increasing cost of living, if they are spending that much on bare essentials, shoppers want to have a good experience in store with neat aisles, fresh produce, good customer service, and above all, discounted deals that help maintain their budgets — and these two retailers are taking over their peers in this aspect.

Which grocers are putting the ‘super’ in supermarkets?

The recent American Customer Satisfaction Index shows an evolution of customer preferences and expectations. The economy is showing a growing influence from the younger generation as well and retailers need to keep up by freshening their approach. This ACS Index is a representation of the relation between shopping experiences and its influence on decisions made by consumers.

Interviews taken with around 41,000 shoppers between January and December 0f 2024 form the data on which the ACS Index is based on. The 18-25 age cohort — a group who are just entering the workforce and are now able to shop more freely — showed particular interest in website quality, value perceptions, and mobile shopping options. Thus proving that the definition of customer satisfaction is changing.

Forrest Morgeson , an adjunct professor of marketing at Michigan State University, has shared that “brands that manage to meet the expectations of younger consumers are gaining ground, while others are falling behind.”

In a somewhat surprising turn, the two retail chains who took the top spots in the index were Trader Joe’s and Publix. Bother grocers topped the index with a tied score of 84 out of 100 with Trader Joe’s maintaining its rating from the previous year.

Trader Joe’s held its own and took the lead in the West Coast, all thanks to its wide and unique array of product offerings, as well its is friendly atmosphere. Parallel to this, Publix dominated in the South as a result of its excellent customer service reputation and neatly kept stores.

Other supermarkets showing good growth potential

Costco, Walmart, and Target — retailers who previously could have been considered the “big three” of grocers — were ranked surprisingly low on the index with only Costco managing to break in to the top 10, at ninth place.

Surprisingly, the smaller New York chain known as Wegmans rose to third place despite only having 111 stores spanning eight states. Wegmans is especially popular in the Northeast for its fresh produce, and it has the quality and user-friendliness of its app to thank for its score of 83.

Walmart-owned Sam’s Club revealed a tied score with Wegmans and has showed great popularity in the Midwest thanks to its competitive pricing and exclusive deals.

The most surprising ranking of all was Costco. The warehouse retailer dropped from first place in the previous year to to ninth place in 2024. This 5% drop in ratings appears to be a result of shifting consumer preferences with the youth showing more interest in online shopping and digital efficiency. Increased membership fee and the discontinuation of longstanding services may also be contributing factors to this retailers decline in popularity.
