America should get itself ready for the impact that comes with Bed Bath & Beyond’s comeback. This good news of the return of the retail chain may be good news to some. However, other individuals may have many questions about this comeback. The retail chain announced its return and stated that it will not operate in the largest state in the nation. The retailer announced that the locations in California will only be catered to through delivery services.
Bed Bath & Beyond’s comeback
Many people may wonder what happened to the retail chain. The company was forced to close the doors of all its stores in 2023. This, after it filed for bankruptcy and could not afford to continue with its operation as usual. Now, the company is attempting to make a comeback. The first Bed Bath & Beyond Home was opened on August 8, near Nashville.
According to the California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s press office, after the retail chain filed for bankruptcy many through that was the end of the road for Bed Bath & Beyond. The announcement on X about the comeback of the retail chain were a surprise to many Americans. Especially to those who thought that the company does not exist anymore, after the closure of all its stores.
However, Gov. Gavin Newsom also said that people are wishing the retail chain well on this endeavour. He added that they wish them well on their attempt to become relevant again. This, especially because the retailer is on its way to open its second store. In addition, the Executive Chairman of Bed Bath & Beyond, Marcus Lemonis, responded to a post made by Gov. Newsom.
The post was made on his personal X account and proposed that pro-business reforms for the state of California. Lemonis responded to the post by stating “We will target opening 300 small to midsize neighborhood stores thru our Kirklands investment.” He also added that Newsom is a smart man and that he knows the post he made was out of frustration.
Exclusion of the nation’s largest state
The Executive Chairman of Bed Bath & Beyond, Marcus Lemonis, made a statement about the chain’s comeback and why California is excluded. In the statement that was issued on August 20, he confirmed that the company will not be opening a brick-and-mortar location in California. Lemonis stated that this large state, which is home to over 39 million people, will only be served through delivery services.
In addition, the statement included that the company is taking a stand because common sense has to be used in this regard. Their focus is that the business should succeed and should operate in states that will allow for the success of a business. The executive chairman also alluded to the fact that employees deserve stable employment that will last. He added that consumers deserve quality products that comes with fair prices.
Unfortunately, the California’s system does not deliver what the company stands for, as indicated in the statement. Lemonis stated that the nation’s largest state’s system provides the complete opposite to what they company stands for. Therefore, it will not open a location in California because the state’s system is not aligned with Bed Bath & Beyond’s vision.
Is the decision political?
Many people are thinking that the reason why Bed Bath & Beyond is not going to open any stores in California is political, but Lemonis insist on the fact that it is not a political matter. He said that the state has one of the most overregulated, expensive, and risky environments for a business to prosper in America. Therefore, it is difficult for businesses to be successful in California as aforementioned as the company what to prevent what happened previously.
