This may impact several loyal consumers who worked on a budget and now have to pay more than they usually did.
Costco’s fan favourite $1.50 hot dog combo
This fan favourite combo has been popular since the 1900’s, specifically 1985. The former CFO of Costco, Richard Galanti was the main person who advocated for the price of this combo over the years. He worked for Costco since 1984 and has always been the spokesperson to defend this deal against the masses. He was of service for nearly 40 years, as this big retailer’s chief financial officer. In March 2024, he stepped down from this position and into a more advisory role – on the 30th of January 2025, he retired from Costco.
Thus, leaving everyone concerned about the changed that may occur, since he will no longer have a say in the financed of the retailer. Also, since he was the key person in the price for the hot dog combo remaining the same over the years, people now fear that an increase can be expected. When he last spoke to the press about the fan favourite combo, after stepping down as CFO – he didn’t sound as confident is previously about the price remaining the same for the hot dog and soda combo.
Costco’s new CFO: Impact on the fan favourite combo
When Richard Galanti stepped down as CFO he was replaced by Gary Millerchip. He is the former CFO of Kroger, a grocery giant. Galanti indicated that his successor is good to go from the very beginning. However, consumers have been worried about the impact this major change might have on the price of the fan favourite combo.
One of the shoppers stated that there will be a change in prices because the person who always paused when it came to increasing prices of products are no longer there. Another shopper indicated that his replacement is Millerchip who was basically infamous for raising prices. People are concerned that Millerchip’s reputation will have a significant impact on Costco’s brand.
What does the future have in-store?
Currently, Costco is facing a period of uncertainty. Many people asked questions over the years as to how the retailer managed to keep this combo at the same price for numerous years. Hence, in 2009, the assistant vice president of Costco’s publishing, managed to settle the debate. He indicated that this is what happens when you operate your business model on a cost-plus basis and not necessarily on what the market will bear. However, the way Galanti spoke about this deal, made it sound that the business model is becoming way too difficult to maintain.
Additionally, Galanti spoke about the challenges companies are experiencing in the current economy. He further alluded to the fact that he will definitely not miss what is currently happening, while he knows that running a retail business is very easy. The only thing you do is, you buy products and then you sell it again.
There are too many challenges in today’s business, for example:
- Regulatory demands
- Supply chain challenges
- Inflation
- Other operational pressures
These challenges can play a major role in the increase of the $1.50 hot dog and soda combo. It will force Costco to give into the decision to increase this price that has been the same for many decades.
