Globally beloved warehouse giant, Costco Wholesale appears to be working tirelessly to cater to every possible need and want of its customers. The discount retailer has been recording a consistently high net sales total for the previous several quarters — despite the tense air in the retail sector as a result of ballooning inflation rates and more recently, issues related to President Trump raising tariffs on good imported to the United States significantly.
Amongst its more recent changes, the warehouse announced it would be extending the operating hours of its gas stations to better accommodate its customer’s schedules.
Costco expands operating hours for the benefit of commuters
In an attempt to make the lives of customers more convenient, Costco Fuel Stations recently announced its decision to expand its business hours both for opening times, as well as closing times. As such, the gas station hours now extend beyond that of the warehouses.
During the earnings call for March 6, Costco Wholesale CEO, Ron Vachris shared that the company has “extended our gas station hours in North America during the quarter to make filling up at Costco more convenient for our members.”
“Generally, our stations are now staying open an hour later than they did previously with some opening earlier as well,” he additionally shared with investors and analysts.
When asked about the new, longer operating window, Gary Millerchip, chief financial officer at Costco, said, “We’ve been pleased so far with the member reaction and we are seeing an improvement in overall usage of the gas stations. It’s early days, of course, but so far, we’ve been pleased by the member response.”
The company’s Kirkland Signature brand fuel offers a price point that is claimed to be 20 cents cheaper when compared to other local competitors. However, much like with its warehouses, in order for a shopper to gain access to this great deal on fuel — or to make use of the filling station at all — they will need to have an active membership with the warehouse chain.
According to the official website of the retailer, Costo Fuel Stations are “open to Costco members only, with Costco Shop Card customers also able to purchase fuel at them.”
With the spread of the news of these new operating hours for the gas stations, customers were naturally curious to know if the warehouses would also be extending its operating hours. As such, company executives were asked if the retailer would be considering changing to longer business hours in the near the near future.
In this regard, Vachris explained that the retailer “will continue to look at the warehouse hours,” however, he did add that “no plans are in place at this time to do that.”
Other changes with the warehouse giant
Prior to March, Costco had close to nine hundred locations in operation globally, six hundred of which were located in the United States. The company began the year with ambitious expansion plans and have since proven to be successful in achieving this goal.
During the course of March, several new U.S. based Costco locations were opened in several states. Sharon, Massachusetts welcomed a particularly special location. According to the company website, the opening of the Sharon Costco warehouse marked Costco’s 620th location in the U.S. and its 900th worldwide.
The retailer is not yet done with its expansion plans for the year, however. According to Vachris, the company has set a target of 28 new stores to be opened during the course of the current fiscal year. Of these new store openings, “three will be relocations for 25 net new buildings.”
The warehouse also recently made a switch from Pepsi products back to Coca-Cola products in its fan-favorite food court and customers are ecstatic.
