The popular warehouse chain, Costco Wholesale has long been a crowd favorite thanks to its unique offering of inventory, competitive pricing, and in-warehouse services and benefits. In fact, the value for money with this retailer is so great, most consumers do not even mind paying the annual membership fee that is required to gain access to the warehouse and its deals.
The retailer often changes the layout of its warehouses and discontinues some products so as to introduce other new products. In short, aside from the price point, things can sometimes be fleeting at Costco and most recently, another popular services was discovered to have been discontinued at the warehouse and customers are showing a rather mixed response to this change.
Costco discontinues popular service at its warehouses
In addition to near unmatchable prices, a membership with the warehouse club comes with a great many perks such as gas stations with cheaper yet high quality gas, and of course, the beloved food court that homes the cult favorite chicken bake and iconic $1.50 hot dog and drink combo.
As is the case with any retailer, changes sometimes have to occur to minimize losses and over the years the warehouse giant has scaled back on privileges and services here and there. The latest change to be enacted by the retailer seems to be its decision to discontinue the coffee grinding service found in the warehouse.
Previously, the warehouse club would keep coffee grinders around the store for the convenience of the customers who had purchased whole coffee beans. Now, after a series of posts on Reddit, it appears that the retailer has opted to remove these public-use grinders from its warehouses.
The grinders were often located near checkout counters or the food court and customers could use the machine to grind their own coffee beans free of charge as an extra membership perk. Recently, however, one Costco shopper posted a picture of the signage that has replaced the coffee grinders in the warehouse and it reads as follows, “The coffee grinders are no longer available in the warehouse.”
This post then produced a large variety of responses with varying sentiments. Amongst the responses, some users shared that they are not surprised that the retailer removed the coffee grinders from stores as they had previously seen other customers misusing the service. Some even noted that they had personally seen others put foreign objects such as hot dogs or nuts into the grinders.
Other users seemed to welcome this removal with open arms, although the reasoning behind this is not entirely clear. On the other hand, many users expressed a sense of remorse at the loss of this privilege. One Costco shopper made a Reddit post that read, “The coffee grinder were just super convenient for me, bought the coffee bag in grains, and grind it right after cashing out.”
“This was one of my main reason for going to Costco, to get freshly ground coffee for a decent price!” another customer lamented.
Other changes at Costco
The retailer also ended off 2024 by announcing that its greatly enjoyed table of books will no longer be available year round and instead it will only be brought out during the festive period towards the end of the year and many customers expressed extreme sadness at this change.
For the first time since 2017, membership fees were also hit with a slight increase, going from $60 to $65 for a standard membership and $120 to $130 for an executive membership. Even with the increase, the company recorded a boost in membership numbers for the first fiscal quarter of 2025. Additionally, net sales showed a spike of approximately “7% year-over-year, while its total revenue also increased by roughly 7%, compared to the same time period last year.”
Parallel to these slightly more negative changes, the retailer also decided to extend the operating hours of its gas stations and members could not be more excited for the extra flexibility.
