One of America’s top retailers, Costco, made a difficult decision that will lead to significant change and might leave some consumers speechless. The retail giant has moved to discontinue a specific abortion pill nationwide. Many consumers may have questions and concerns about what is happening, and readers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the details below.

Discontinuation of a specific abortion pill

The retail giant, Costco, announced on Thursday that it will no longer sell a specific type of abortion pill in its pharmacies. The mifepristone abortion pill is generally available in Costco pharmacies across the United States. However, Costco’s decision affects this product because it will no longer be sold in U.S. pharmacies due to low demand.

In addition, the retailer stated that it stands by its decision not to sell mifepristone. The company said the choice is supported by a lack of demand from members for this product. Costco members and other patients are not purchasing it, and continuing to keep it available would result in losses. The company also suggested that consumers of this medication typically receive it directly from their medical providers.

Reason behind the discontinuation

Costco made the decision to discontinue mifepristone in part because of several campaigns against the pill. These campaigns included religious activists, Inspire Investing, and Alliance Defending Freedom. According to Arun Sundaram, a senior analyst at CFRA, many retailers are becoming increasingly cautious about the actions they take.

Companies are especially vigilant about their stance on political and social issues because recent controversies have led to boycotts, negative media coverage, and polarized consumer reactions.

In addition, Bloomberg reported that religious activist groups targeted several retailers, including Costco. Other retailers targeted last year—some of Costco’s rivals—include Kroger (KR.N), Walmart (WMT.N), and Albertsons (ACI.N). Those groups will now focus on Walgreens (WBA.O) and CVS Health (CVS.N). The reason these retailers were targeted is that they provided the abortion pill in states where abortion is legal.

What’s next?

According to Walgreens’ website, the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on the mifepristone abortion pill means the company can continue to provide it under Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines. In 2000, the FDA approved mifepristone, in combination with misoprostol, to end a pregnancy of up to 10 weeks’ gestation.

It has also been stated that the abortion pill blocks progesterone—the hormone that helps maintain the uterine lining during pregnancy and plays a critical role in the menstrual cycle. Although progesterone occurs naturally in a woman’s body, it can also be produced in a laboratory for use in certain forms of birth control. In the abortion process, misoprostol is taken after mifepristone to complete the process.

Moreover, retailers like Kroger have stated that they are reviewing the FDA’s updates about the abortion pill. Kroger said it is taking a closer look at the updated mifepristone Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) drug safety program. CVS, on the other hand, said it will provide prescriptions for mifepristone only in selected states where it is legally permissible.
