Christmas is coming to Costco — 5 top-festive items in the “What’s New?” aisle

As part of their January promotions, warehouse giant, Costco has placed various appliances on discount for a limited period of time. Amongst these products is a fan favorite, the Dyson cordless vacuum.

What is the hype around Dyson?

Founded in England in 1991 by James Dyson, the appliance company has quickly grown to be a symbol of luxury for the home. With products ranging from vacuum cleaners, bladeless fans, hand dryers, lights, and hair dryers, the brand has quickly gained popularity due to its unique design and innovative functionality features. The Dyson Airwrap, a blow dryer hairstyling system with various attachments, was a gamechanger for the hair tool industry. The tool is said to give the user professional, salon-quality styled hair from the comfort of your home and it quickly became a viral product despite its high price point. The company’s bladeless fan and air purifiers are also often sought after. The unique shape and design of these devices add a touch of minimalist yet futuristic style to any room. Customers who are willing to spend a little more can actually build an entire Dyson ecosystem in their homes.

Why should I pay upwards of $500 for a simple vacuum cleaner?

Dyson has a wide range of vacuum cleaners, all of which a handheld, cordless, stick vacuums. The Dyson Cyclone V10 Animal + Cordless Vacuum Cleaner particularly boasts an impressive array of features to make cleaning your home or office an activity you look forward to rather than dread. The brand markets this specific unit as “Powerful and versatile for deep cleaning. Without the cord. Now with hair detangling technology”.

The vacuum possess an ergonomic stick design with the motor contained with the dustbin at the top near the handle. There is a laser light in the head of the vacuum to ensure every last speck of dust is captured. The appliances utilizes the brand’s iconic purple color in its design and weighs a mere 5.8lbs.

Other features mentioned on the Costco site include:

  • Powerful Suction and Versatile Format to Deep Clean Everywhere
  • Engineered For Whole-home, Deep Cleaning
  • Up To 60 Minutes of Run Time*
  • 3 Cleaning Modes for the Right Power Where You Need It
  • 30% More Suction Than the Dyson V8

This vacuum uses a bagless system and the dirt is emptied directly into the bin with the simple flick of a lever. There are multiple attachments to ensure every nook and cranny is reached.

Can Costco get you this device at a lower price point?

On Costco’s website, this modern and sleek vacuum cleaner is available for purchase. The product, however, is only available to membership holders and the price for the Cyclone V10 Animal is $499.99 as part of the retailer’s January savings specials.

The standard price for the Cyclone V10 Animal is usually $599.99. The hundred dollar discount was labelled to be valid only until January 20. The discount does not appear to be available any longer despite the product still being included in the January savings category on the company’s website.

Is this a case of poor website maintenance on the retailer’s part or is this some sort of new, misleading marketing tactic to boost sales? If this is indeed the case, it is in really poor taste on the part of a company that already charges customers an annual membership fee to be allowed to make purchases from them.
