Christmas is coming to Costco — 5 top-festive items in the “What’s New?” aisle

Several of America’s top retailers, Walmart, Costco, and Target, are in major competition for the top position. Costco is currently one of the retailers who is thriving when it comes to the DEI initiatives, while other retailers like Target are rolling back. The main aim of DEI initiatives is to promote a diverse workforce where everyone, consumers as well as employees are valued and appreciated for their efforts. This is exactly what Costco is currently focused on.

The rise of Costo as a Giant retailer

The fact that Costco is focused on its DEI initiatives puts the retailer ahead of its counterparts. This is because many people including its consumers value the DEI initiatives. Black and Hispanic consumers spend their money at Costco stores, while other popular retailers like Target, have seen declining in-store visits. It was stated on 5 March by an analytics firm Numerator, that the change may be a consequence of the retailer’s adjustments to the DEI initiatives.

According to the report, it seems that the Black and Hispanic households appear to be reducing store visits at extremely high rates during the weeks after Target’s DEI rollback. Meanwhile Costco, are maintaining a strong DEI stance, and because of this the retailer are attracting many of these same consumers. It is also important to note that in the year-to-year visits, Target has seen a decline in nearly 5 million consumers during a four-week period which was conclude on 9 February. For a retailer like Costco, this big-box store company, saw an increase of 7.7 million visits. Which is a massive growth for the company.

Costco’s commitment to DEI initiatives

Costco has remained committed to the promotion and encouragement of DEI initiatives in the company. As stated by the wholesaler’s board, Costco is committed to a company that is rooted and grounded on respect and inclusion, because the retailer believes these aspects are necessary. Ron Vachris, the CEO of Costco, encouraged shareholders to support the retailer’s commitment to DEI initiatives. Vachris believes the focus on DEI initiatives can contribute to boosting the company’s profits.

DEI Gap at Walmart and Target

Walmart’s performance regarding the DEI initiatives is remaining consistent during the four weeks that was examined. According to the results of a report, it was stated that even though Walmart also rolled back DEI initiatives, these strategies were never a central focus for the retailer. Also, Target made an announcement to roll back on the company’s DEI initiatives on 24 January. This decision was followed by President Donald Trump’s order of him following inauguration to cease DEI programs.

In addition, it was stated that the retail giant indicated that the changes would align better with the Target consumer base, according to the worldwide memo. On 30 January, a whole uprise occurs during a news conference. Nekima Levy Armstrong, a civil rights attorney, stood outside the headquarters of Target and called a nationwide boycott. This happened on the first day of Black History Month.

Additionally, New Birth Missionary Baptist Church Pastor Dr. Jamal Bryant announced a 40-day fast from Target, and this happened on 5 March 2025. According to a press release, this pastor managed to get 100 000 Black Shoppers to “halt all purchases” and “divest any stock holdings” in the retailer. The decline in Target’s traffic may reflect the company’s decision to change things a little on customers. One-third of a survey that was conducted indicated that the respondents knew about the 28 February economic blackout.

According to David Albert, Collage Group’s chief insights officer, one thing that gets brand like Target in trouble is when they are saying something and then doing something completely different. He told Business Insider that they have seen here, especially with Target, is that they have eroded that trust.
