One of America’s retail powerhouses, Costco, has issued an important warning regarding one of the retailer’s popular products. The retailer is known to be different from all the other stores in the retail industry and always focuses on meeting the needs of both employees and consumers. The safety and health of its consumers are central to the company. Therefore, the retailer raised a recent issue on the product that should not be returned to stores, but that consumers should rather dispose of it immediately.
The story behind the recent recall issue
Nobody likes to hear that a product has been recalled, especially if it was a popular product. The current recall by America’s retail giant, Costco, is set to create an extremely dangerous situation. Therefore, the affected product should not even be returned to the store of purchase, but consumers are urged to get rid of it immediately.
Unfortunately, Costco had to issue an urgent notice about a product that has the potential to cause risk and injuries. This issue was specifically linked to one of the company’s sparkling wines. Therefore, anyone who has bought this product is advised to dispose of it immediately, rather than returning it to a store.
In addition, the products that is in question is the Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene, which is an in-house private label product that is popular for its low price point. The retailer sent out a notice pertaining to the wine to its members. In this notice the company warned everyone that there was a possible risk of certain bottles shattering, even before they were opened
The details about the affected products
Anyone consumer who may have purchased a bottle of the sparkling wine should get rid of it immediately. These products were available between April 25, 2025, and August 26, 2025. Consumers are being asked not to pop any unopened bottles. These prosecco products were available in several locations such as:
- Iowa,
- Illinois,
- Indiana,
- Kentucky,
- Minnesota,
- Michigan,
- Missouri,
- North Dakota,
- Nebraska,
- Ohio,
- South Dakota, or
- Wisconsin.
One of the consumers stated that they had two corks that started to pop out as soon as they allowed some pressure off the cage. Another unhappy consumer has been saving a bottle of this product for their 50th wedding anniversary. As could be imaged this is a really disappointing situation.
What to do to dispose of the Costco product?
To get rid of these bottles it needs to be safely discarded. Those consumers who have been impacted by this unfortunate situation, can expect to receive a full refund. Costco is known to have some of the best cheap ‘champagne’ options out there. Thus, there is a good chance that several people have chosen this specific prosecco. Check for the item ID, which is 1879870, if you’re unsure.
In addition, to get rid of this prosecco, the retail giant, Costco, recommends that consumers carefully wrap the bottle in paper towels. They should then place it in a plastic bag just in case the glass shatters. After this, consumers should place the bag in the trash and head to Costco with the notice letter they have received to claim your refund.
Additionally, if there are any issues, the letter states that they need to contact Ethica Wines, which is an importer the company works with to produce Kirkland brand wine. In addition, to ask consumers to get rid of the product, to dump a faulty product, rather than return it, is a rather unusual move for retailers when it comes to the recall of products. However, it does show the severity of the situation and how dangerous this product is. Therefore, Costco consumers are encouraged to not consume this product and to get rid of it immediately.
