Some of America’s well-known retailers like, Costco, Sam’s Club, and Walmart, are standing the face competition from a retailer coming in from behind. This new retailer store arrived with lower prices and the retailer does not require consumers to have membership status. These aspects will attract more consumers to it, which will eventually have an impact on the other retailers.

Walmart’s competition: The new powerhouse retailer

The new supermarket which competes with some of America’s largest retailers, does not require membership from consumers. Also, the company has stores that are currently operating in ten states – competing against large warehouse retailers without requiring annual registration from consumers, it is reducing costs and eliminating intermediaries in the sale of food.

Additionally, with costs on a constant increase, many consumers ran to warehouses here they can purchase products in bulk which will work out cheaper. These warehouses would be retailers like Costco and Sam’s Club, however, the do require an annual membership – especially for prices ranging from $50 to $130. For example, at Costco, consumers pay a price of $65 for a standard membership and $130 will be paid towards an executive with more benefits.

Additionally, at Sam’s Club offers two options for consumers: a $50 and a $110 membership option. However, it is essential to note that this depends on the level of access. For example, for some consumers, these costs can negate the benefits of long-term savings.

The new retailer’s presence in ten states

As mentioned previously in this article, this new powerhouse, known as Winco Foods, already has stores operative in ten states. These states include:

  • Arizona,
  • California,
  • Idaho,
  • Montana,
  • Nevada,
  • Oklahoma,
  • Oregon,
  • Texas,
  • Utah,
  • Washington.

WinCo Foods, serve as an alternative to Costco and Sam’s Club. Unlike these two retailers, Winco Foods, does not require membership which make it a more accessible option for consumers who are looking to reduce their food expenses. WinCo Foods allows the stores in these states to stock its products without having to rely on the intervention of any third parties.

The retailer keeps its prices low due to its business model which is focused on cutting out the middlemen. The reason for this is because the aim is to purchase products directly from manufacturers and farms. Other aspects are implemented by WinCo Foods that serves as cost-cutting strategies, allowing fewer financial expenses. These strategies include:

  • Avoiding advertising,
  • Not accepting credit cards,
  • Requiring customers to package their own purchases.
  • Bulk Sales

The retailer has a large section of products in big quantities, and consumers should note that it has more than 800 items in some stores, which can give than a variety of options to purchase from. This retailer continues to attract consumers who are looking for affordable options without the added cost of membership.

Moreover, Winco stands in the fourth place when it comes to the best supermarkets in the United States. This is according to the Annual Retailer Preference Index (RPI), which was conducted by a consulting firm called dunnhumby – the firm surveyed 11 000 consumers. Additionally, on this list H-E-B is top, followed by Market Basket and Costco, while Aldi holds the fifth position. This study indicated that the main factor in a supermarket’s success, is its ability to help consumers save money by being focused on low prices, promotions, and rewards.

How does Winco Operates

This retailer is employee owned since 1985, which is one of the aspects that sets it apart from other supermarket chains. The Employee Stock Ownership Plan makes provision for employees to have shares in the company. Every employee becomes an owner at WinCo after they have worked at the company for 500 hours in six months, this leads to 1 000 per year. This structure and opportunity provide better financial stability and also allowed an expansion of the chain to occur. As a result, the retailer can proudly say this led to it having 135 stores in the country.
