Warehouse club giant, Costco Wholesale has been steadily growing its presence in both the United States and globally. The variety and competitive price points offered by the retailer makes the small, annual membership fee well worth its cost to customers and the membership numbers prove this without any doubt.
The warehouse styled retailer boasts a “treasure hunt” experience to its customers and it is perhaps this ever-changing rotation of inventory and services within the warehouse that continues to draw in customers. Amongst its latest changes, members will be pleased to discover some new and old offerings at the retailer’s beloved food court.
Costco refreshes its food court
Whilst just about everything else in the warehouse is fleeting in nature, the iconic $1.50 hot dog and drink combo has remained cemented in place, or rather price, for decades upon decades now. Connoisseurs of the warehouse food court can rest assured that this tasty and affordable deal will remain unaffected, however, change is afoot in the food court for this year and customers are going to love it.
Here are some of the changes that will soon be rolled out at the ever-popular Costco food court:
Coca-Cola products
Late last year, rumors began speculating that the retailer would be making a big switch from Pepsi products in the food court and early this year, the rumor was confirmed and the company announced that it will be returning to Coca-Cola products for its food court soda fountains.
During a shareholders meeting held earlier this year in January, company CEO Ron Vachris confirmed that Costco will be “converting our food court fountain business back over to Coca-Cola.” This switcheroo was confirmed to come into effect this summer. This shift from Pepsi products will mark a significant change for the retailer who had been offering Pepsi products at its food courts since 2013. The 2013 change was made in order to cut down costs. The company has also confirmed that the price of the beloved hot dog and drink combo will remain unchanged after the switch to Coca-Cola this summer.
Warm turkey sandwich makes a comeback
A few years ago, the wholesale retailer made the decision to remove the turkey provolone sandwich, which was served hot, from its menu and customers were quite saddened. Now, however, during a second quarter earnings call, Costco CFO Gary Millerchip has confirmed that this “fan-favorite turkey provolone sandwich” will be making a grand comeback at the food court once the third quarter begins.
Strawberry banana smoothies for the summer
During the second quarter earnings call this March, Millerchip also confirmed that the company had “introduced a new strawberry banana smoothie” and according to a Facebook post made by the retailer, it had already been made available to customers since the beginning of that month.
Other changes at Costco
Despite the harsh economic climate, Costco appears to be doing relatively well for the last few quarters and even has some expansion plans in the works, with 6 new warehouses having already been opened this March. The inauguration of the Sharon, Massachusetts warehouse marked the 900th overall Costco location.
Additionally, Millerchip also revealed that the food courts and pharmacies run by Costco “led the way for its ancillary businesses.”
Costco offers much more than just a wholesale shopping experience at its warehouse. In addition to bulk inventory, members can enjoy the benefits of the retailer’s other ancillary business which include, gas stations, an optical department, hearing aids, and tire installation.
The company has also shared that these extras such as the food court and other ancillary business are what draws more customers to opt for Costco.
During the shareholders meeting, Vachris said that, “Globally, the company’s food courts saw sales of 229 million hot dog and soda combos in fiscal 2024.” By the end of the second quarter, the company recorded an astounding 140.6 million membership holders.
