Cost of living expenses have steadily been increasing and in recent months, it has been beginning to feel like the price of things, even simple essential goods like food and drink, are at an all time high.
Even Dollar Tree, a store that is meant to offer deeply reduced pricing, is not immune to the growingly precarious economic landscape and customers of this dollar store should brace for a price hike in coming days and it seems that stores based in Minnesota will be amongst the first to be impacted by the impending price hikes.
Dollar Tree confirms price increases
Once upon a vastly more stable economic time, shopping at a dollar store meant paying one dollar per item but sad the reality is that those days are now long gone. In 2019, Dollar Tree was compelled to put a $1.25 maximum price cap in place. Since then, $1.25 has been the lowest possible price offered by the discount retailer, however, there has been a trickling increase in pricing for other items over the years.
The bargain store began introducing items priced at $3 and then $5 and if the economic climate continues to pass a storm cloud over the retail sector, these prices are more than likely to increase.
Dollar Tree Plus item offerings
The inventory priced in the $3-$5 range is categorized as “Dollar Tree Plus” items. The company made the decision to introduce these slightly pricier items to more than five thousand of its stores across the country. The retailer felt that by doing so, it would “provide customers with even greater deals.”
As of June 2024, the company placed the price limit of these Dollar Tree Plus items at $5. Unfortunately, it seems that even this price is set to increase in the coming days. This is not the only price point to be affected, however, as it seems the standard range of inventory priced at $1.25 will also be facing a small price hike.
During the earnings call for the fourth quarter, Dollar Tree made an announcement sharing the news of the impending price increases. According to the CEO of Dollar Tree, “This year, across 3,000 stores, we expect to expand our multi-price assortment by over 300 items at price points ranging from $1.50 to $7.”
Now, once these price increases come into effect in Dollar Tree stores, the minimum price with be capped at $1.50 and the maximum price will be capped at $7.
These figures may seem insignificant or small, however it could have a huge impact on consumers, particularly those from lower income cohorts.
Whilst these price hikes have been confirmed by the company, there has been no further official communication regarding the specific dates on which the new pricing will come into effect. Additionally, the list of stores that will carry the new Dollar Tree Plus items has also not been released yet. However, according to Kroc, it seems more than likely that “at least some of our 105 Minnesota locations will get them since we have quite a few with the Dollar Tree Plus items available.”
Retail sector continues to struggle
If even dollar stores are feeling the pinch during these tense times, is there much hope left for stores with higher price points?
The impact of higher than average inflation rates and stagnant job markets is being felt by all retailers lately with many having no choice but to shut down operations entirely. Longstanding, beloved stores like Joann Fabrics filed for bankruptcy and is in the process of closing all 800 of its stores after being to go-to choice for craft supplies for hobbyists for decades.
More recently, fast-fashion giant Forever 21 also announced it will be closing the doors of all of its stores across the country after recording consistent losses due to be unable to keep up with competition from online retailers like Temu and Shein.
