It appears that the recent increase in membership fees for Costco Warehouse is not bringing additional perks with it, but rather customers are having to say goodbye to a longstanding service that came free with with a membership. The discount retailer has always been a fan-favorite for shoppers since the discounted prices, wide variety of offerings, and extremely affordable food court have made the annual membership fee well worth its cost. Recently, with the rise of social media platforms like Tiktok, the warehouse has gained even more traction and popularity. For example, the famous chicken bake recently went viral on the app and as a result, it was often sold out at multiple locations.
Despite this steadily rising popularity, the retailer is now revoking its coffee grinding services and some customers are not too pleased about it.
Coffee grinding at Costco cancelled
The past year has seen a slight decline in services offered to members of the warehouse. In addition to the $5 and $10 membership fee increase, the retailer announced that the 2024 seasonal period would mark the end of year-round book sales at the vast majority of its branches. The retailer has also been stricter in enforcing membership guidelines and the prevention of sharing memberships. Customers are now required to have a membership if they wish to make purchases from the food court as well.
The latest in this string of changes is the discontinuation of the coffee grinding service and customers have somewhat differing opinions on the matter. Warehouse members were previously allowed access to a public-use coffee grinder to grind their coffee beans. The machines could be found near checkout areas, as well as at the food court. Costco shoppers, however, have recently been sharing on Reddit that these machines are slowly being removed from all store locations.
One shopper shared an image of a sign posted where the machines used to be and it read, “The coffee grinders are no longer available in the warehouse.”
Costco related posts on Reddit are showing both positive and negative reactions to the removal of these machines. One particularly saddened shopper made a post that reads as follows, “The coffee grinder were just super convenient for me, bought the coffee bag in grains, and grind it right after cashing out. This was one of my main reason for going to Costco, to get freshly ground coffee for a decent price!”
Other shoppers were not shocked in the slightest by this removal and further shared that many customers would not always use the grinder for its intended purpose. Some customers were spotted placing items like hot dogs and nuts in the grinder, thereby abusing this free service — a factor likely contributing to the decision to remove these machines from stores.
Possibly due to its misuse, some shoppers even expressed joy at this change and readily welcomed the removal of the coffee grinders.
Financial state of the warehouse
The latest earning report for the first quarter of fiscal 2025 revealed an increase in membership numbers with the overall total increasing by 8% even after the membership fee increase. Net sales and total revenue have both shown an increase of approximately 7% year-over-year.
The company has shared that this fee increase was enacted in order to aid its decision to increase wages for both hourly employees and managerial staff across all of its stores.
This may not be the end of price hikes for warehouse shoppers as the recent tariff increases made by President Trump will soon begin impacting the prices of goods across the industry. It seems that there is still a long way to go before any sort of agreement is reached between the president and the countries with increased tariffs and consumers will bear the brunt for it.
On an earnings call made on December 12, Costco Chief Financial Officer Gary Millerchip shared, “When it rains, it rains on everybody.”
