America’s top retailer, Walmart, has been in the news due to one of the retailer’s shrimp products that might be contaminated. Therefore, the American government issued a warning to the public to prevent any health and safety issues from occurring. Consumers are encouraged not to purchase these shrimps. If consumers have already purchased it and have it at home, they are urged not to eat it but to get rid of it immediately.

The government issued a warning

When the presidential cabinet had a meeting on Tuesday, the Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy had a lot to say. This is after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an urgent warning to Americans. The warning was specifically towards some shrimp products that are sold at Walmart, and that they may contain radioactive substance known as cesium-137.

Walmart and a California seafood company recalled packages of frozen shrimp last week. These recalls affected more than 20 states after federal officials found a possible radioactive contamination. According to Kennedy the South Asian nations are dumping these extremely contaminated shrimps on America. He further alluded to the fact that the country just stopped a shipment that was contaminated with cesium-137, which is radioactive.

Additionally, he also stated that when these shrimps are being farmed, things like bactericides and antibiotics are used. He claimed that all kinds of chemicals are used, and this is how the shrimp are being contaminated. The European nations will not take this contaminated shrimp, therefore, it is dumped in America, as argued by Kennedy. He concluded by saying, “We have now increased FDA inspections on shrimp to make sure that Americans are not buying and eating contaminated shrimp and putting our shrimpers out of business.”

Details about the specific recalled Shrimp

Three lots of Great Value brand Frozen raw shrimp has been pulled from Walmart’s stores. Walmart did this immediately after it was informed about the shipment that was linked to the contamination has reached it stores. The recalled packages have lot codes of 8005540-1, 8005538-1 and 8005539-1. The best-by dates for all of these products are of March 15, 2027.

Additionally, consumers are urged to throw the products away or return it to any Walmart store to receive a refund. The shrimp were sold in various locations such as:

  • Alabama,
  • Arkansas,
  • Florida,
  • Georgia,
  • Kentucky,
  • Louisiana,
  • Missouri,
  • Mississippi,
  • Ohio,
  • Oklahoma,
  • Pennsylvania,
  • Texas and
  • West Virginia.

One of Walmart’s spokespersons made a statement last week and said that the health and safety of its consumers remain the company’s main focus. Walmart issued a sales restriction and also removed the recalled product form the stores that were impacted. The retailer is further working with the supplier of the products to investigate the case further.

Moreover, California-based Southwind Foods also recalled bagged frozen shrimp that were sold under the brands Sand Bar, Arctic Shores, Best Yet, Great American and First Street. These products were distributed between July 17 and Aug. 8, 2025. It was distributed to retailers and wholesalers located in Alabama, Arizona, California, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia and Washington state.

Reason for the recall

The U.S. FDA stated that the investigation of this recalled product began after U.S. Customs and Border Protection flagged cesium-137. It was flagged in shipping containers that arrived in several ports such as:

  • Los Angeles,
  • Houston,
  • Miami and
  • Savannah, Georgia.

Various samples of the product were tested to see if it was contaminated. Only one frozen breaded shrimp sample that was imported by Indonesia’s P.T. Bahari Makmur Sejati, or BMS Foods, indicated signed of contamination. Even though those shipments were denied entry, other containers later reached U.S. distributors and retailers like Walmart before alerts were triggered.

According to Donald Schaffner, a food safety expert at Rutgers University, the risk pertaining to the recalled shrimp is quite low. Despite this comment, the FDA continue to urge caution to these contaminated products to avoid unnecessary exposure to low-level radiation.

The FDA stated that potentially contaminate products should not be avoided because it could result in consequences that could have been prevented.  In addition, Cesium-137 contamination is quite rare in food supply, however, trace amounts of the isotope are widespread in the environment. This may include soil, food and air, because of nuclear weapons testing, reactor operations and accidents.
