Many of America’s top retailers, like Home Depot, are continually under their customers’ watchful eyes. Retailers have to be extremely mindful of the decisions they make, because consumers will not always be satisfied with what they do. Currently, the hardware retailer has implemented a change that many customers are unhappy about. This change specifically relates to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), a framework that encourages fair treatment of all individuals, especially previously disadvantaged groups.

Retailers and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)

In the past few years, many retailers have made changes to their store policies under the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) framework. Most of them also made public announcements about these changes, highlighting the company’s support for the initiatives. Many large retailers—like Walmart, Target, Tractor Supply, and Anheuser-Busch—created and released their own practices concerning DEI initiatives.

In addition, many DEI initiatives began as well-intended programs offered by retailers in support of the framework, but American consumers soon became extremely skeptical about these efforts. Retailers like Target and Bud Light experienced major challenges when their DEI promotions were identified as going too far. As a result, both retailers faced massive boycotts as consumers chose not to shop at these stores anymore.

Home Depot implements a DEI change

Although Home Depot was not part of any boycotts, the retailer is making quiet changes to its DEI initiatives. In the past, the retailer had part of its website dedicated to DEI initiatives. Since March 2024, as part of the retailer’s DEI initiatives, it dedicated a whole page to DEI. The page read as follows:

“We strive to ensure that our company culture maintains a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment so that we can attract and retain the best employees, amplify their unique experiences and ideas, and strengthen the communities where we operate.”

As reported by Retail Brew, the page dedicated to DEI at Home Depot has now changed to only reading:

“WeAreTHD”

The report stated that there is no other reference on the page relating to support for diversity, equity, or inclusion. There is a clear distinction between what the page previously stood for and what it is highlighting now. Further on, the page reads as follows:

“Our culture and our associates provide intangible and hard-to-replicate competitive advantages, which have been key to helping us navigate challenging market conditions. This includes investing in competitive wages and benefits while also providing the culture, tools, training, and development opportunities that make working at The Home Depot an enjoyable and rewarding experience.”

The public’s opinion

Many consumers are outraged about this quiet but significant change Home Depot made. The new statement on the page is now more focused on the organization and being productive and profitable, whereas the previous DEI statement was more people-focused and had a sensitive, personal approach. Also, Home Depot did not issue any press release about the change it would be implementing concerning the retailer’s DEI initiatives. No apology has been issued to the consumers and employees who may be affected.

The DEI language was replaced with what the company currently values and what is important to it now. This may look like something small to the company, but it will affect others. It will especially impact people who are part of previously disadvantaged groups and who are loyal Home Depot consumers and employees. This is something the retailer has to be sensitive about, especially considering what happened to other giant retailers with major boycotts.
