April 1st, the fool’s day, has quickly become fun way for companies to increase traction on social media through silly, yet occasionally believable marketing campaigns. Some retailers will announce the “launch” of a bizarre product, whilst others issue ridiculous statements. Regardless of how it is done, April Fool’s Day is an amusing day to consume media content.

Home Depot was recently the target of an April Fool’s prank after Pro Tools Review cited a fake statement that claimed Home Depot would now be charging its shoppers a fee to park their cars at the retailer’s parking lots. Many shoppers believed the announcement to be true as prices everywhere are going up due to the current economic turmoil. The retailer quickly debunked these rumors, however.

Home Depot April Fool’s prank

A writer at Pro Tool Reviews, a online product outlet, woke up on the morning of April 1 feeling especially mischievous an as a result, a report was published that day that claimed Home Depot would begin charging its customers a fee for parking as it attempts to keep up with growing inflation rates. Home Depot remained completely in the dark about this and only became aware of the article which sparked mass speculation after it had been published.

According to the article, as part of this “surprising and unconventional response to rising inflation,” it was reported that the structure of this newly implemented parking fee would differ from location to location. The fees would range from “$2 for up to two hours in central Florida to $5 for a full day of parking in Los Angeles.”

The announcement was cited back to a fictional spokesperson for Home Depot and formed part of an elaborate April Fool’s prank from the editorial team at Pro Tool Reviews who are known for this kind of jest. The full prank statement reads as follows:

“Inflation has hit us hard, from supply chain costs to labor shortages,” fictional spokesperson Tucker Lotman stated in the April 1 press release. “By implementing a modest parking fee, we can avoid passing these costs directly onto our customers through higher prices on lumber, tools, and gardening supplies.”

These “fees” were alleged to come into affect in May 2025 and shoppers took to social media to express concern and outrage.

“I need $1.49 worth of screws at Home Depot but have to pay $5.00 to park? In this economy?” an outraged customer wrote in a post on X.

“Really? Home Depot?? 2 dollars to park? I’ll just park next door at Lowe’s,” claimed another in an X post.

Pro Tool Reviews Editor-in-Chief Kenny Koehler shared that the publication enjoys pulling this kind of prank each year, however the massive traction this particular article gained has been “truly humbling.”

“As a team, we enjoy good-natured humor and love laughing with other people,” Koehler shared in a statement on Wednesday. “The idea came about as we put ourselves in the shoes of these companies and wondered what might be an over-the-top response to inflation. As we batted around brands and ideas, the idea of charging for parking came up, and that’s how Home Depot came into the story.”

“We hope our friends over at Home Depot were able to laugh as well,” Koehler added.

What did Home Depot have to say?

On April 2, an X user shared a post preparing to boycott the retailer if these fees come into effect. The post read, “To combat rising inflation, The Home Depot announced it will begin charging customers for parking at stores nationwide starting next month. #BoycottHomeDepot ⁦@HomeDepot⁩ wants to charge you $5 to park Source: Pro Tool Reviews.”

Home Depot quickly debunked any rumors with a response to the post from the company’s official X page, which read as follows, “Hi Rocky, this is an April Fools’ post from a tool review website. We do not charge for parking.”
