This year, 2025, Labor Day falls on September 1. Several American retailers decided to close their stores for 24 hours, allowing their employees and consumers to spend the day with family and friends. On the other hand, some retailers decided that the best option would be to remain open. Consumers are encouraged to have a look at the list of stores that will remain open and those that will close for 24 hours.

Labor Day: September 1, 2025

The day many employees have been looking forward to is finally here. Today, Monday, September 01, Americans are celebrating Labor Day. The history behind this day runs extremely deep when we reflect on the rights and laws of American employees. On the other hand, many focused on the fact that it also marks the unofficial end of Summer and that it is a holiday. An opportunity to either rest, spend time with family or friends, and just enjoy the festivities.

According to the United States Department of Labor, this day is dedicated to the social and economic accomplishments of the American employee. There is still a lot of mystery around who establish this day has a holiday. It is indicated by some of the history records that Peter J. McGuire was the first person with the suggestion. His suggestion specified a day to honor those “who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.”
McGuire was the general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, and he was also the co-founder of the American Federation of Labor. Another person who received the credit for this Labor Day holiday, was Matthew Maguire. He was a machinist and later secretary of the Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J. It was reported that he proposed the holiday in 1882 while he was serving as the secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York.
Moreover, it was Oregon who was the first state that passed the law that recognised Labor Day has a holiday in 1887. It was made official in 1894 by the Congress. It was passed and indicated that the first Monday in September, annually, will be a legal holiday in the Columbia District and the territories.

Retail stores that will remain open

Most grocery stores in America, will remain open on Labor Day. Although the stores are open, some of the stores will operate on special days’ time schedules. This means the stores will only be open for a specific duration during the day. Consumers are encouraged to take note of the operational hours of the stores. Many of America’s top retailers are remaining open except Costco, who made the decision to close for 24 hours. Below is a list of the stores that will remain open and the allocated times as well:
