Once again, a massive product recall has been announced for one of America’s largest retailers, Walmart. This big retailer has called back products from its stores in twenty different states. This decision was made after an extremely dangerous bacteria, the listeria bacteria, was found in an edible item. In addition, the product that was recalled is broccoli florets – specifically the Marketside brand. The retailer recalled 12-ounce bags of this branded broccoli from 20 states where Walmart stores are operating.
Walmart: Story behind the Marketside brand broccoli
On 31 December 2024, this massive decision was announced by this brand’s manufacturer, Braga Fresh. This was how the manufacturer responded to possible health risks that may or may not have occurred among consumers, due to a product it produced. However, no cases of any illnesses and affected consumers were reported to date. Additionally, it is essential that consumers are aware of the details of the Market brand broccoli bags that are affected. These are the items identified with UPC code “6 81131 32884 5” and lot code “BFFG327A6”.
Moreover, these products were sold in the 20 states where Walmart operates and had an expiry date of 10 December 2024. These bags are not found on shelves anymore, since the announcement. However, it is feared that some consumers may still have it in their possession at home, after they purchased it before the announcement was made in December 2024. Thus, consumers are highly encouraged to discard this product as soon as possible to prevent any health risks from occurring.

Why is this product dangerous?
Many may be wondering why this product is dangerous and that they will not get sick from it. However, it is important that consumers remain vigilant and careful, because this is really a serious matter. Let’s put it into perspective – listeria is a bacterium that can result into a severe disease called listeriosis. It causes symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting – these are similar symptoms to food poisoning.
However, in some cases where the individuals involved are pregnant women, elderly individuals, and immunocompromised people, this bacterium can lead to more severe symptoms. These symptoms can include:
- severe infections
- fever
- muscle aches
- stiff neck
- other complications that could be extremely fatal.
The risk of this infection is especially severe in pregnant women. It can lead to miscarriages or serious problems with the development of the fetus. Therefore, consumers are yet again, encouraged to get rid of this product if they still have it at home. Although no illnesses have been reported as yet, experts indicated that consumers have to look out for the symptoms associated with the listeriosis bacteria. If any symptoms have been identified, it is crucial for affected consumers to immediately seek medical attention.
