Christmas is coming to Costco — 5 top-festive items in the “What’s New?” aisle

Costco Wholesale, the warehouse giant, is steadily growing itself to take the spot as the top retailer in the industry, it seems. Despite the ongoing retail apocalypse, this retailer has not shown any signs of major struggles during these tough economic times where most, if not all, consumers are being compelled to cut back and budget intensely. Whilst other retailers are shuttering multiple locations to minimize losses caused by underperformance, this wholesale fan-favorite has been in the process of opening several new locations, some in the United States and others globally.

Costco adds new warehouses to its real estate footprint

Whilst the year may have started out to be a bit controversial for the warehouse when contract negotiations almost went south, the company quickly bounced back and was able to continue on with its expansion plans. In December last year, the company revealed its goal to open around several more locations during the course of this year and it appears the company has been successful in achieving this.

The wholesale retailer will open the doors of nine new locations this year, with six being based in the United States and the remaining three slated for global expansion.

According to the official company website, the six new warehouses will be opened during the course of March, 2025 in Brentwood, California; Highland, California; Prosper, Texas; Weatherford, Texas; Genesee County, Michigan; and Sharon, Massachusetts. Last week, as of March 15, all six of these stores have been inaugurated.

Additionally, the retailer has plans to open another store in Stuart, Florida sometime during April. Internationally, the company will open one new location in Minami Alps, Japan by next month as well.

Ardeer, Australia will also welcome a new Costco Warehouse during the course of this year, however, the exact date for the opening of this location has not yet been revealed.

“We continue to project 29 openings during fiscal year ’25, of which three will be relocations and so 26 net new buildings,” Costco CEO and President Ron Vachris shared in an earnings call for December 2024. “Ten of those warehouses will be outside of the U.S.”

Company financials

According to the sales results for the company for January, the warehouse retailer reported a net sales amount of $19.51 billion for the retail month of January. This marks a significant 9.2% increase from that of the previous year. Additionally, “net sales for the first 22 weeks were $113.55 billion, an increase of 8.2 percent from $104.94 billion last year.”

The company had been operating 897 warehouses collectively in the United States and globally. With the opening of the six new locations this March, the retailer now runs 903 locations and if CEO Ron Vachris’ projected plans for the remainder of the year come to fruition, this number is set to increase. According to the company website the retailer’s physical presence includes “617 in the United States and Puerto Rico, 109 in Canada, 41 in Mexico, 36 in Japan, 29 in the United Kingdom, 19 in Korea, 15 in Australia, 14 in Taiwan, seven in China, five in Spain, two in France, and one each in Iceland, New Zealand and Sweden. Costco also operates e-commerce sites in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Mexico, Korea, Taiwan, Japan and Australia.”

“We see some great opportunities in Canada and Mexico have been strong countries for us. We continue to see growth opportunities both in Europe and Asia, as well,” Vachris shared during the same earnings call last December.

As counterintuitive as it may sound, it is the almost unmatchable low price point offered by the retailer that is boosting company success and allowing for such large scale expansion plans. The company has previously shared that these discounted deals are only made possible due to the membership fee paid by customers and clearly it is an operational model that yields success even in trying economic times.
