Costco Warehouse is determined to make 2025 its best year yet and appears to be incredibly busy behind the scenes with various plans in motion to grow the retail chain whilst still benefitting its customers. Amidst an array of new stores opening across the United States and a vote in favor of continuing diversity, equity, and inclusion policies; the company has another sweet treat lined up for its customers later this year.
The C in Costco stands for consistency and commitment
The Costco food court, known for its affordable prices and generous offerings will be making a big beverage switch later this year.
The company’s most popular deal is the $1.50 hot dog and drink combo and the price of this combo has remained unchanged for over 40 years. Their commitment to this price point is perhaps a major reason contributing to this combo’s popularity during a time of increased living costs.
This really is quite the testament of Costco’s commitment to customer satisfaction. Think about it, could you name one product in today’s economy that can boast the same price it had in 1984? You may have to dig quite deep for that one.
Over the years, the company has made other changes to the combo. The size of the soda was changed from 12 ounces to 20 ounces and they also began producing their own Kirkland signature hot dogs in 2008 to keep costs down — amongst other examples. Through all of these changes, the $1.50 price point remained constant.
However, amongst these changes, the most controversial was the decision to switch from Coca-Cola products to that of Pepsi in 2013. The reason for the switch was, of course, cost efficiency. The company got a better deal on Pepsi products. Coke has almost 70 percent market share in the United States meaning their pricing would likely be slightly higher.
Members of the warehouse chain were not pleased with the decision but the company persisted with it to maintain the price of their famous combo. In hindsight, it likely was a good business decision despite the disappointment. If they had kept on Coke products at the time and were forced to increase the price of their magnum opus combo, customers would have been a million times more upset.
Costco’s vice president of food services at the time, Alan Bubitz, said, “you’re not going to be able to please everybody, it’s our job to preserve the integrity of the price point.”
A new era for Costco… or rather, the return of an old one
After a 12 year wait, Coke lovers can now rejoice as the food court at Costco will once again serve Coke products. a shareholder meeting held earlier this month revealed the news that the company will be making the switch sometime this year. CEO Ron Vachris confirmed that Costco is bringing back Coca-Cola products at its food court. Independently, the CFO confirmed that the hot dog combo will maintain its $1.50 price as well.
Coke versus Pepsi is an ongoing debate amongst soft drink consumers and being in the retail industry, particularly in matters of food, some tradeoffs are going to have to be made. Costco has proven its commitment to its customer’s wallets by maintaining prices consistently for almost a decade.
Costco has not yet divulged if they are able to maintain the $1.50 price point because of a better deal offered by Coke or if the beverage company had taken a small hit on overall cost to regain the business of over 900 branches of Costco. It is likely the latter since having the business of that many Costco branches would only increase turnover. A cut on prices for a larger volume of business is also a beneficial tradeoff on Coke’s part.
