One of America’s powerhouse retailers, Walmart, is facing tremendous tariff challenges. This chain has more than 4,600 stores in the United States. Therefore, the question remains, how will this impact the consumer? The large retailer experienced a rise of 5% in the annual sale prices and also, according to analysts, Walmart is slowly seeing a revenue growth of 4% in 2025. However, there is a great possibility that a Value in-house brand will suffer under the effects of the tariffs.

Walmart facing tariff challenges

It started that many shoppers focused on getting products at the lowest prices, rather than looking at where the product is produced. As long as the price fits their pockets, consumers are most focused on it. As confirmed by the Walmart executive, consumers do not look at whether a product was produced in the United States, Canada, China, or anywhere else. As stated by the LSEG reports, the retailer’s revenue rose by 5% to $680.47 billion by the end of 31 January 2025.

Reason for this tariff rise

President Donald Trump made the decision to add new tariffs on good not produces in the United States. As a result of this, Walmart investors believe this decision leaves Walmart under the bind of President Trump. Products produced the in the follow places will experience new tariffs added:

  • China
  • Mexico
  • Canada
  • India

Additionally, Walmart is the first large United States retailer to report results for the fourth quarter, this includes holiday period sales. The retailer is also the largest importer of containerised goods. The retailer generates 40% of the sales it makes from products like clothing, electronics and toys, that are primarily made in China, India and other nations that is now targeted by Trump with these new tariffs. A S&P analyst indicated that the retailer’s sales growth forecast showed 4% growth and that is more than the sale growth forecast of its competitor Target.

Impact on Walmart

According to Wall Street analysts, Walmart’s revenue growth is expected to slow by 4%, this is a hint of anxiety to due to tariffs.  A Walmart spokesperson did to make any comment on this, indicated that the retailer was in its quiet and slow period just before its earnings report. In addition, the retailer tried to reduce the profit margins by reducing its dependence on China for certain products.  This was done by increasing the warehouse automation and relocating white-collar jobs – especially to lower-cost areas like Arkansas.

Walmart indicated that it will be a troublesome experience to cut ties with other countries because the retailer depended in these countries to provide certain products to the United States. It further alluded to the fact that trade is being affected and as a result of this, it could have a significant impact of Walmart as a business and its financial performance. One of the investors of the retailer indicated that they have a concern about whether the results will indicate this significant effect on the business.

Moreover, this investor claimed that the effects of this increased of tariffs will have a minimal effect on the company. Because he believes that Walmart continuously maintained margin growth over the past years, in these periods included seasons of high inflation and port strikes. Michael Lasser, am UBS analyst, stated that they believe Walmart will continuously growth and will remain one of the better positioned retailers, even through the high tariffs. This is due to the price leadership, the buying power of consumers, and the retailer’s global sourcing capabilities.

Consumers will have to prepare themselves to pay higher prices for goods that they may need on a daily. This is all as a result of the decision that was made by President Donald Trump.
