One of America’s top retailers, Walmart, is known for its quality products at cheap and affordable prices. However, the retailer is now increasing the prices on popular items. To add more pressure on consumers, Target another American retail giant, is not far behind. The question now remains; how will this decision impact the consumers and the retailers?

Price hikes at retailer giants

Many people have a lot to say about the rising prices at Walmart. John David Rainy, The chief financial officer of Walmart stated, the continuation of the rising tariff rates, is the main reason why the prices of products are increasing. Some products even had increases of up to 40% which is outrageous. According to Walmart’s spokesperson, the retailer has always been focused on keep prices as low as possible.

Now, the company feels forced to increase prices due to the things happing in the country. The spokesperson told Business Insider in a statement that the retailer will continue to try to keep prices as low as possible. It was further stated that the retailer will keep the prices of produce low as long as it can, given the reality of the small retail margins.

Even though specific products are experiencing massive price increase, retailers can choose to raise prices for a several of reasons. Also, the listings of the products do not portray how much tariffs may have affected the retail price of products.

Example of high increases

An example of the price increases at Walmart is one of the popular toys. The label indicated the price of a Jurassic World T. rex toy increasing from $39.92 on April 27 to a significant $55 on May 21. This is an increase of nearly 38% on this toy. A website that keeps track of the retailer’s prices, AisleGopher, shows the price was for the toy was $29.74 back in November 2024.

In addition, the price of another toy experienced a massive increase. This is the Baby Born doll and the price of the toy increase from $34.97 in March to $49.97 in May. Highlighting a major increase of about 43% for this fan favourite toy. Another example of high increase is the left-handed fishing reel for sale at the retail giant. This item went from being available for $57.37 in April, to being on sale for $83.26 in May. The price of this product shows a massive increase of 45%, as recorded by AisleGopher, the price was $51.12 on March 14.

Moreover, some of the price increase also occurred in recent cases at Target. Last week Wednesday, the two aforementioned toys were listed on Target.com for a similar price that Walmart had it on sale fore before the price increase occurred. By last week Thursday, however, the price of the Baby Born doll was increased to be in line with Walmart.

Response of the public

The CFO of Walmart, John David Rainey, stated that the tariff rate currently remains “too high” therefore, warns the public that prices would go up due to this. Prices for some products will continue to increase during the next few weeks and months, as the tariff rate remain high. The responds of the United Stated President Donald Trump were striking, as he said that the retailer should “eat the tariffs.”

Employees of the retailer posted their opinions about these increase prices on social media. They took pictures of the products with the high price increases and posted it on several social media platforms. These photo’s included the changes made at both Walmart and Target. The retailer stated that it sources about 60% of what it sells in the United Stated from US suppliers. Also, the retailer has been on a multiyear effort to reduce its dependence on Chinese products, which were the main cause of the high tariff rates.
