Sam’s Club is one of America’s most popular warehouses (owned by Walmart) and is currently facing severe challenges with membership cancellations. Most of America’s large retailers require consumers to have a membership with the store to purchase products. You need your membership card with you even if you make a purchase and are not allowed to purchase anything, without a membership card. With membership access, consumers also have various benefits. However, due to new changes that the retailer is implementing, like the new policy, many consumers are claiming to end their membership with Sam’s Club.
Sam’s Club consumer membership
The warehouse club just warned consumers who are members of Sam’s Club, of the new policy that is planned to be implemented in a few weeks. Many Americans are really serious about their membership with large retailers, especially since it became a billion-dollar boon for larger retailers in the United States – over the past few years. It is stated that Sam’s Club and Costco are America’s two top warehouses, and the competition between the two just increased due to the major policy change.
As a result of this new policy, many of the consumers decided that the want to revoke their membership with Sam’s Club and will rather join Costco. This retailer, Costco, has gained over 20 million new members since 2020. In addition, the Plus members of Sam’s Club is already paying $110 a year for exclusive benefits, that does not necessarily come with the basic membership. This basic membership comes with a $50 annual cost. One of the benefits for Plus memberships, are that of free shipping. It is for this reason that many consumers with Plus membership, are extremely unhappy.
New policy: What is the impact of it?
Sam’s Club recently announced that the club’s consumers with Plus memberships, have until 18 August 2025, to enjoy one of the major benefits that comes with the membership. This benefit is the free shipping consumers received when they purchase products online that is less than $50. The club is revoking free shipping for orders below $50 and will only offer free shipping for qualifying orders.
In addition, these are orders that are $50 or even those more than $50. This announcement was made through an email that was sent to members. Additionally, members who do not have a purchase of $50 or more in their carts, will have to pay a shipping fee of $8. Sam’s Club stated that some category exclusions apply where variable shipping will be charged.
Moreover, the implementation of this new policy comes after Walmart indicated the retailer’s first quarter earnings of 2024. It brought $21.4 billion from Sam’s Club net sales in the United States – resulting in a $4.6 increase since last year. Also, Walmart revealed that it is Sam’s Club’s membership income that increased by 13.3% during the quarter. In October 2022, Sam’s Club increased their membership fees and now the limited on free shipping policy is announced. The basic membership fee increased from $40 to $50 per year and the Plus membership fee increased from $100 to $110.
Responses of consumers
Many consumers were very unhappy about the current changes at Sam’s Club. The Plus members are busy with their outrages on social media platforms. They are threatening to end their membership and will rather join Costco. This large retailer, Costco, gained over 20 million new members since 2020. In addition, the retailer responded in a tweet – by adding this cart minimum, it will allow increased access to different ways of purchasing items. This is especially for its Plus members and therefore it will make it easier for consumers to buy products online. Now the question remains, how will this new policy impact Sam’s Club consumer outcome and the amount of membership.
