Discount Grocer is moving from the rebrand of several stores back to its roots. One of America’s well-known discount grocery chains, Save-A-Lot, has been busy with the correction of a rebranding that failed. The chain decided to make a big rebranding move in 2024, and unfortunately, it did not work out as planned. Now, the massive supermarket chain is trying to redress the changes it made by returning to its roots. The retailer is now reopening 27 stores nationwide.
Story behind the rebrand
Over the last two years, the American grocery industry has been encountering several difficulties. As a result of this. numerous supermarket chains announced their plans to close several stores. One of the big grocery chains, Kroger, announced in June 2025 that the retailer is planning on closing around 60 stores nationwide in the next 18 months.
Save A Lot, which is one of the biggest independently owned discount grocery chains in the United States. The chain recently reopened 27 of its branded stores in Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. This occurred after the chain experienced a failed rebranding of the stores in 2024. This information was confirmed by the company in a statement.
These stores were rebranded late last year, in 2024. Some of the brands that were used are brands such as Value Food Market or Value Foods Market, as reported by the Akron Beacon Journal. However, these stores were returned to the Save A Lot brand over the summer months. According to a statement made by the company, the stores were improperly rebranded in 2024, that is why it is changed back to its roots.
In addition, Safeway Stores, that are owned by Albertsons Companies, indicated that it will close 12 stores. Most of these stores is set to close in Colorado, by November 7. It was suggested to KOAA News5 that these are the stores that were not performing up to the company’s expectations.
Making a major comeback in the grocery department
According to a statement that was made, the company is busy to re-establish both its high operational and financial standards. It is important to note that the stores will continue to offer local consumers Save A Lot’s outstanding value on an assortment of fresh, affordable, healthy foods. This will come with 50+ high-quality and award-winning private label brands.
In addition, Save A Lot began hosting grand reopening events in July and August 2025. The company also managed to donate $15,500 to local charities. The company’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Bill Mayo made a statement regarding the reopening. He said that the chain is delighted to reintroduce Save A Lot to these markets and to support the community. It has been stated that the chain continues to be committed to providing high quality food and outstanding value to their consumers.
