Recently, Walmart announced several massive changes, including the closure of several stores. America’s retail giant made it known that it is closing several stores this year, which will occur across six states. As the retailer is continuing its focus on the future, it is also getting rid of some of the unproductive past. Consumers are encouraged to have a look at the list of store closures to check if the branch near them is affected.

Reason behind the store closures

Although the retailer is continuously growing and expanding, some Walmart stores just cannot keep up. The retailer’s total fiscal year revenue was at a high of $681 billion, and its comparable sales increased by 4.6 percent in 2024. However, this year, the online sales of the retailer grew by 20 percent compared to 2024. This indicates that the e-commerce of the retailer has been growing rapidly over the past year.

However, just because the retailer is growing in all these spheres does not mean that every Walmart store has been a success. For some stores it is difficult to keep up with the pace the overall company is growing and expanding. It is to just because of financial strain a store may experience, but it is also about how flexible and adaptable a store is. Especially when we look at the fact that e-commerce is now the department where Walmart is receiving majority of its sales. Also, this is the part of the retailer that will continuously grow, considering the world is becoming more and more technologically driven.

Changes for the retail giant

The retailer accomplished many successes in quarter four, such as achieving the store chain’s Q4 $180.6 billion revenue. Also, Walmart made the announcement about its plans to open more stores at 100 new locations by the end of this year. Although the retailer achieved these successes, there will still be stores that are being closed down.

To be specific, there are plans for closures that will impact ten Walmart stores in six different states during the course of this year. It is important for the public to note that the stores at these locations are not being renovated with the aim for it to operate again. It has been confirmed by the company that the closures of these stores at these distinct locations, will be permanent.

The list of Walmart stores closures

Consumers are urged to find out if their favourite store or nearby Walmart location is on the list of the Walmart stores that is set to close down in the six U.S. states this year. As stated by the retailer, below is a list of the locations that will be permanently closed down in 2025. Consumers should note that the exact closing dates for these stores have not yet been announced.

  1. California – The Eventual store closures are expected to occur in the cities of San Diego (Imperial Ave), El Cajon store (Fletcher Parkway), West Covina store (Eastland Center Drive), Fremont store (Albrae Street), Granite Bay store (Douglas Blvd.)
  2. Colorado – The Aurora store (E. Colfax Ave.)
  3. Georgia – The Dunwoody store (Ashford Dunwoody Road), Marietta store (Roswell Road)
  4. Maryland – The Towson store (Putty Hill Ave.)
  5. Ohio – The Columbus store (S. High St.)
  6. Wisconsin – The Milwaukee store (W. Main St.)

Although the closure of these stores may be disturbing to some consumers, there is good news that comes with it. If a consumer’s local store is affected by these store closures, they can expect new stores to open very soon. The retailer is opening dozens of new Walmart stores across the Unites States by the end of this year. Other American top retailers like Target, Sam’s Club, and Trader Joe’s are also expecting to expand to other locations.
