Christmas is coming to Costco — 5 top-festive items in the “What’s New?” aisle

Two of America’s top retailers, Walmart and Target, are on the ropes due to the change in their labeling of certain products. The retailers will therefore have to change the way they sell and promote certain products. This implementation is a result of the new 2025 Law that forces these retailers to comply and make the necessary changes when it comes to the way they sell their products.

Walmart-Target and the New 2025 Law

This already started back in February, when many food labels had to be changed. At the beginning of 2025, the United States big retailers like Walmart and Target are encouraged to adjust their shelves. This is a result of the new regulation from America’s FDA. This specific measure has an aim of establishing change for certain food product packaging.

Additionally, these food product packaging should comply to the revised rules that seek to encourage healthier habits among consumers. In addition, the new legislation that was implemented will directly impact the presentation of the food of Walmart and Target. It will also create modifications that consumers will notice when making their daily purchases.

A FDA’s new definition of healthy

A new definition of what it means to be healthy was implemented by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and this is the main reason why several stores had to look at the way they sell certain products. It was stated that the FDA’s new definition of healthy, is linked to the latest nutrition science and the federal guideline that was established. Furthermore, it was alluded to the fact that the last time the term healthy was defined on a certain package, was in the 90’s.

Additionally, the term healthy received a redefinition concerning the food packaging, when it comes to the updated nutritional criteria. The products that the retailers want to label as “healthy” should contain a specific number of food groups including:

  • Fruits,
  • Vegetables,
  • Cereals,
  • Proteins or
  • Dairy products.

This rule was specifically included in the new provisions, and it is also indicated that retailers like Walmart and Target should limit the levels of saturated fats, sodium and added sugars in their products. According to the agency’s authorities, the fact that this new definition is implemented, means that the old definition of healthy is being replaced.

The old definition of healthy only focused on nutrients in isolation, ingredients like vitamins and minerals, whereas it left behind the parameters that were insufficient to promote a complete dietary pattern. Manufacturers including Walmart and Target will be able to start the implementing process of their changes from 28 February 2025. There are certain products that will no longer classify as being healthy. Therefore, there will be a change in the packaging of these products to identify this. These products are:

  • White bread,
  • Sugary cereals and
  • High-sugar yogurts

Moreover, the examples of foods that qualify under this new definition of what it means to be healthy include:

  • Fatty fish such as salmon,
  • Nuts,
  • Seeds,
  • Eggs, and
  • Olive oil.

Food: A vehicle for well-being

The main reason behind this change that occurred in the food of the retailers like Walmart and Target, lies in the eating habits of the American population. It was stated that more than 80% of citizens do not consume enough fruits, vegetables, dairy, and seafood. According to the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, they are rather eating excessive amounts of saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars.

In addition, as stated by specialists, these dietary trends encourage the tragic increase in chronic diseases such as:

  • Type 2 diabetes,
  • Obesity,
  • Heart problems and
  • Certain types of cancer.

Also, it is important to note that in most cases it is the marginalised communities, racial minorities, and socioeconomically disadvantaged groups who face these conditions at a higher rate than other. Now, a food will be considered “healthy” if it includes a certain total of basic healthy foods such as:

  • vegetables,
  • proteins,
  • whole grains or
  • dairy.

Additionally, Walmart and Target should comply with strict limits regarding their saturated fats, added sugars and sodium. This new approach to go about adopting a healthy lifestyle, aims to reflect a comprehensive understanding of how different nutrients work together within balanced dietary patterns.
