America’s retail giant, Walmart, is making a big move that may surprise many. This retailer has been on the map, busy with various changes and new implementations. Now, it has made an even bigger move by purchasing an entire shopping center and not just a mere store. It has been stated that this is just the retail giant’s aggressive new plan to control its neighbors. But the question remains, what does this mean to consumers?

Details about this massive decision

Walmart has made a massive decision to purchase a shopping center in Connecticut for $44 million. This has been one of the retailer’s latest moves it has been making. The retail giant does not just want to buy the property on which a singular store can be built; instead, it wants the surrounding property as well.

The company now owns the Walmart Center in Norwalk, Connecticut, which is situated about 50 miles from New York City. Although Walmart already has a retail store at the plaza, the company now owns the full strip. As stated by a release this includes retailers such as:

  • Ulta,
  • Panera Bread,
  • Qdoba and much more.

Jeff Kintzer, who is the principal of Royal Properties, recently made a statement. In this statement he alluded to the fact that “The amount of interest in this center was substantial. With several options to consider, Walmart stepped up with the best overall offer.”

Walmart’s plans of purchasing shopping centers

The retail giant’s latest purchase is not its first shopping mall acquisition that it closes for the year 2025. There were other deals, specifically two plazas in January and May, respectively. The recent move Walmart’s made was in the real estate since it has plans to purchase a whole shopping center.

In addition, when it comes to the Norwalk shopping center, it is safe to say that it is at least the third plaza Walmart has purchased this year. In January 2025, the retailer confirmed to multiple outlets that the company purchased the Monroeville Mall in Monroeville, Pennsylvania. What makes this purchase different from the Norwalk center, is the fact that Walmart does not have an existing store in the Monroeville Mall.

As said in a statement that was shared to the public, Walmart stated that it “is very interested in being part of any future redevelopment” of the mall. According to CBL Properties, the firm that oversaw the sale, said the deal was worth $34 million. Also, in May 2025, Walmart made another purchased. According to the real estate records the retailer bought the Bethel Park Shopping Center in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, for $39.6 million. It is important to note that the retailer already has a store in the strip, similar to that of the Norwalk center.

The impact this will have on consumers

Some of the retail experts told USA TODAY that Walmart’s acquisition of shopping centers is an indication of more than just an economic investment. This can also be seen as a strategic approach to managing consumers’ entire shopping experience.

Deborah Weinswig, who is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of retail research firm Coresight Research, shared a statement on these implementations. She stated that the fact that the retailer is owning shopping center, Walmart can oversee the facilities on site because this is a central part of the shopping experience.

Weinswig further alluded to the fact that “The whole thing is a customer journey. The customer journey, it starts in the parking lot, and actually right now because of where we are with buy online, pick up in store, sometimes the only thing you do is go in the parking lot.”

In addition, an adjunct professor of economics at the University of New Haven, John Rosen, highlighted the fact that the retailer wants to improve the full consumer experience of shopping at its store; whether it is from the company’s parking lot to which stores are nearby.
