One of America’s top retailers, Walmart, just made a massive change to its online store. The main reason for this change is to provide a more inclusive system when it comes to the communication between consumers and employees. The company has always been focused on putting its employees first, and this is one of the ways to do just that.

Details about the Walmart change

The retail giant, Walmart, is making a massive change when it comes to the online shopping communication experience of the company. One of the reasons for this is to enhance the communication between customers and its 1.5 million employees. This week, America’s top retailer spoke about the upgraded Walmart Translation Platform that is designed to make online “shopping easier and more inclusive for everyone.”

In addition, the first announcement of this new system was done in June 2025. The WTP provides consumers with real-time translation which includes around 44 languages. However, it also goes a step further when using artificial intelligence (AI). It is used to provide a greater understanding to the company when it comes to the intent and context of the user.

The unique operation of the platform

The is a specific process that consumers need to follow when they are making use if this platform. It might be slightly complex to some, especially because the use of both verbatim and text are used to communicate. Also, the fact that there are a focused on several languages might also be another process that consumers need to get familiar and comfortable with.

Moreover, when it comes to the searching of a specific item, the consumer type into the search bar what they want to find. However, this should be typed in Spanish, at times it could be a Spanish dialect from Colombia, a Spanish dialect from Mexico, or even Puerto Rico or Chile. This is stated by Arpitha Shetty, director of localization, content and accessibility at Walmart International.

It is important to note that there are different variations for the various nationalities. She further stated that, what Walmart does is that they “adapt that local Spanish, that particular dialect, to the catalog in English so a user gets the best possible experience. We translate their intent, to get them what they want.”

Also, the app is specifically also designed in such a way to recognize these difficulties that may be experienced. It has a focus on mapping the variations back to the entry to ensure consumers are assisted with what they are looking for.  For example, Walmart cites a customer in Quebec searching for a particular brand of yogurt. If the consumer type in “yogourt liberte” in search of Liberte Yogurt, which is a brand, and not freedom yogurt as a literal translation would suggest.

The reason behind the change

As stated by the senior vice president and chief product officer at Walmart International, Tim Simmons, this will be a better experience for consumers. It will also be a cost saving effect. He further stated that beyond the efficiencies Walmart has gained employing agentic AI.

The company is trying to create a better overall experience when it comes to the focus on cultural adaptation throughout the entire tech-stack. When looking at this new system, running the new Walmart Translation Platform costs around 1% of the previous system. Hence, the company is saving more than $20 million, every year.

In addition, this specific tool enables conversations in both text-to-text and speech-to-speech formats. Meaning, it is catering for a diversity of people. It is to ensure that all people feel comfortable in their unique way of communicating because not everyone is comfortable in verbal communication and others are uncomfortable in text messages.
