Walmart, one of the top retailers in America has set out to open new stores in various locations, as part its 2025 expansion plan. As the largest retailer, this is a great opportunity for the company to open doors and even create job opportunities. The company’s CEO revealed that Walmart is planning on building or converting more than 150 stores in the next five (5) years. He also reiterates that the company is dedicated to remodelling existing stores.

Walmart: The importance of this big step

The question may be, why is this retailer focused on expansion since its already the largest retailer in America? The are four essential aspects to consider when answering this question:

  • A boost for local communities to support suppliers
  • Improving access to everyday essentials for underserved areas
  • Driving economic growth
  • Creating job opportunities

Getting people economically active means they need to have means to financially contribute to the economy. To assist in this regarding, Walmart is creating job opportunities for citizens, by opening new stores. These new jobs come with many benefits, like tuition-free college since day one, flexible working hours, and competitive paid time off.

Food for thought

Since Walmart is one of the largest retailers in the United States, it is already contributing much to the economy. This retailer has an initiative called “Investing in America” and we all can agree that it is doing just that. The CEO of this large supplier confirmed that it is planning to build or transform more than 150 stores, while being busy remodelling the existing stores. He added that these efforts indicated millions of dollars in capital investment labour, supplies and text revenues. The country will help the retailer reach and serve more consumers as we believe it already does, but now on a larger scale.

Locations of these new Walmart stores

Walmart confirmed to Business Insider that the company’s plan is to open 10 new stores in 2025. The retailer already has 4606 stores in the United States, as well as 600 Sam’s Club outliers. These new stores will add to the already existing total stores. The following is where the new stores are expected to open:

  • California (x2)
  • Texas (x3)
  • Alabama (x1)
  • Florida (x2)
  • Arizona (x1)

Walmart supercentres are expected to open in California and Texas, while the Walmart Neighbourhood Markets will open in Alabama and Floria. Also, the one Sam’s Club will open in Arizona. The retailer highlighted its massive confidence in the consumers of American and believe that the support will remain intact and will even grow with these new developments and changes.

What does the future look like?

As we all know by now, Walmart has many new plans in place. While the retailer is planning to open new stores, it is currently busy with the remodelling of 650 existing stores – across 47 states in Puerto Rico. A number of 117 of these stores already reopened in November 2024. Business Insider indicated that the worth of these changes in the existing stores is around half a billion dollars.

The transformations of these existing stores and the opening of new stores, reflects the retailer’s concept of “Store of the Future.” The designs of the stores consist of enhanced layouts, a wider range of products, as well as the implementation of cutting-edge technology – to improve the experience of the consumers. This is also to attract new consumers – more younger consumers that values the digitalisation.
