As the holiday season is coming to an end, many consumers are left with Christmas gifts they are planning on returning. Every year hundreds of people stand in queues waiting for their turn to return Christmas gifts. This is an exhausting process for both the consumer and the employees retail stores. Thus, Walmart, one of the largest retailers in America made this amazing decision, to make returning gift a little easier and convenient for consumers. However, the retailer recently announced that it is reverting back to the original return policy.
Walmart’s new return policy: Christmas period
Walmart announce its new updated return policy on 9 December 2024. The main purpose of this updated policy was to make it easy and convenient for consumers to return their Christmas gifts. There are some restrictions on the dates of when consumers are allowed to return products. The following are some of the essential changes the retailer made:

Return policy of Walmart and its competitors
Many other retailers changed their respective policies to make provision for the high return rate during the Christmas season. Like Target for example, the retailer’s return period is generally 90 days, but the company made changes for the return of electric items and entertainment equipment brought during the Christmas period. Excluding Walmart, other retailers also changed their policies during the Christmas period, for example:
- Target (Items bought between 7 November 2024 and December 2024 – had a 30-day refund period.)
- Amazon (Extended return policy for the 2024 holiday season – Most of the items purchased between 1 November – 31 December can be returned by 31 January 2025. This excluded Apple products.)
- Kohl’s (Electronics should be returned in 30 days, whereas beauty products can be return within 60 days.)
These retailers adapted their return policy on items like:
- Electronics
- Entertainment items
- Watches
However, it is essential to note that these changes were only made to accommodate consumers during the Christmas period. Consumers should be expecting the policies to return to the original policy, now that the Christmas period has concluded.
What is next for Walmart?
The vice president of Walmart indicated changes to the pickup and delivery of products – as the retailer revealed the change in the new systems. Additionally, the CEO of this large retailer also revealed how the company is planning on making use of artificial intelligence – specifically in the planning of the new stores. It is essential that consumers keep in mind that they have enough time to return good and any appliance during the indicated time periods. Therefore, the retailers are planning on returning to their original returning policies, because the hectic retail season came to an end. Therefore the “headache-free” policy will also soon come to an end.
