The American retail giant, Walmart, is always ready to provide benefits to its consumers, members, and employees with benefits that will keep them coming back for more. Now, the retailer rolled out a New Year’s Round Discount, which will affect 1.6 million Americans. Many retail employees will soon be at the forefront to enjoy a new perk.

New benefits for employees

Walmart, the largest retail house in America, made an announcement of the retailer’s plans to make new benefits available to employees. It announced that the retailer is expanding the already existing 10% employee discount to cover almost all the grocery expenditure of employees. These groceries include dairy, frozen foods, dry goods, meat, and seafood.

Kieran Shanahan, Walmart’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), said that the company knows the impact the discounts make to both their employees and their families. He further stated that they discount program has been made simpler and more accessible. This will allow more of the Walmart’s associates and their families to make use of these benefits.

Additionally, this new benefit really helps and motivates employees who have to go their extra mile for their employer. With the pressure many retailers have to endure with the continuous rise in tariffs, this is some good news for employees and their family members. In some way, this is also an opportunity for Walmart to try and retain the consumers, who may be the families of their associates, or the associates themselves satisfied. It will also allow them to purchase at the store, especially now during this uncertain time that came as a result of the inflations and tariff rates.

Walmart’s current 10% perk

Currently the retailer is providing its employees with 10% discount on specific groceries products. Many stated previous that this discount means a lot to them and their families. Especially looking at the state of the economy and the high tariffs rates. This discount came at just the right time and is impacting many lives through it. In addition, Walmart has always been known as the retailer who goes the extra mile for its employees and consumers, this is nothing different.

The COO stated that the 10% Walmart Associate Discount Card previously only covered certain products, but now it expanded. The card previously provided discount on products like fresh produce and general items such as clothing and toys. However, it expanded to other foods during holiday seasons. This benefit will now be available for both food and merchandise year-round, starting immediately.

The details about this change

As stated by a memo from the Chief People Officer of Walmart, Donna Morris, this change will cover around 1.6 million United States employees. These employees are the ones who will qualify for this discount after they have been employed by the company for 90 days. Those employees who has been working for the retailer for more than 20 years, will receive this benefit for life.

In addition, this discount implemented by America’s retail giant, covers 95% of the regularly priced products available in the store, as indicated by the memo. As could be expected, this will create employee morale and an opportunity for employees to support their stores as well, by shopping there. This expansion that the retailer will be implementing is in line with the other retail discounts afford by several programs.

Moreover, it has been stated that the employees of Target, one of Walmart’s rivals, get 10% off most of the merchandise available at the retailer. The Target employees also receive an additional discount of 20% from food and wellness products. Another retailer Kroger offers its employees a 10% discount on private-label brand. Meanwhile, other American retailers such as Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods both provide their employees with 20% discount.
