After years of no price increase on products at Walmart, consumers can now expect to pay higher prices than before. Walmart is one of America’s powerhouse retailers, but this large chain is increasing the prices of products due to an important decision that was recently made. This decision might come as a shock and challenge for some consumers, but for Walmart employees, it should be an opportunity. Walmart made the significant decision to increase what the company pays its employees, therefore the changes in product prices.

Walmart increases the remuneration of employees

When companies decide to increase what they give to their employees. there are several options to consider. Firstly, some businesses may absorb the higher costs and therefore take smaller profits. Secondly, other companies may indicate that they have no choice but to increase the prices of products. This option also includes laying off employees.

The third and last option is when companies decide to look for alternative ways to improve the productivity of the company. With higher productivity, companies focus on the increase of revenue and profit alongside higher wages. So, this option focuses on increases on both sides – the productivity of the company and the increases of wages for employees. The increase productivity is to ensure the company is able to afford to increase the remuneration of employees.

Additionally, McDonalds recently implemented option 3 after the state bare increase the minimum wages in California. This is also essential to note for Walmart consumers – because the retailer recently announced the way forward and made changes to the displaying of product prices in stores.

Walmart’s product price changes

The large retailer decided to implement a new way of adding prices to its products. It will no longer have paper price tags on the shelves, indicated the prices of the products. Instead, it will now have digital shelf labels, also referred to as DSL as the abbreviation. There are several benefits of DSL, for example, it is highly time effective – instead of taking hours or days to complete these labels, DSL takes minutes. As stated by Walmart, this will prevent employees from the time-consuming process of updating thousands of price labels in stores.

In addition, the retailer made used of 50 stores to run a trail or pilot study on the DSLs, in the beginning of 2024. The plan now is to expand the DSL to 2,300 of the retailer’s 4,700 stores by 2026. This means that the pilot in the 50 stores worked effectively and now Walmart is considering introducing it in other stores as well.

Story behind the Digital Shelf Labels (DSL)

The DSL came into play after it was introduced by one of Walmart workers, Daniela Boscan. Boscan is a food & consumable team lead at Walmart in Texas, and this proud employee is responsible for the brand-new technology era at Walmart. Boscan stated that DSLs has transformed her life and shared three main benefits if it:

  1. Increase productivity and reduced walking time: employees can now spend less time on adding price tags to shelves and spend their time wisely, by being more productive. What used to take days to complete and more than one employee, take only a few minutes with the implementation of DSLs.
  2. Simplified stock replenishment: a “stock to light” feature is added to the Walmart system. This makes provision for workers to use their mobile device by flashing an LED light on the tag of the shelf – signaling if attention is required at any location.
  3. Faster order picking and fulfilment: just like point number 2 – there is a “pick to light” feature. This process identifies the location of products where consumers made online orders. Hence, “speeding up the picking process and improving order accuracy.”
