After almost 10 years, Volvo has reused the XC70 nameplate but instead of a rough wagon, this time-around is a modern plug-in hybrid SUV with a stated 124-mile electric range on the CLTC test circuit in China, with the new model being based on the Scalable Modular Architecture platform designed specifically to support long-range plug-in hybrids, and with complex safety technology, bi-directional charging, and a claimed range of more than 746 miles altogether.

Familiar nameplate returns with transformed identity

According to Autoblog, the nameplate of the Volvo XC70 is returning, but it seems like it is quite different than what the long-term fans can recall. An initial XC70, introduced in 2003 and dropped in 2016, was a clad, reinforced adaptation of the V70 mid-size wagon, raised and with greater ground clearance, and a reputation of being a car that could be used for both practicality and off-road-like character.

Today, it returned in the form of the XC70, but this time the model no longer has a wagon base; it has a new name as a long-range plug-in hybrid SUV. The XC70 is the first long-range plug-in hybrid, or extended range EV, in the Volvo brand, with an electric range of more than 124 miles in the CLTC cycle.

The XC70 is based on the Scalable Modular Architecture system, designed by Geely Group, which produces long-range PHEVs, and it is currently targeted at the Chinese market first, followed by the European market. It has a range of over 746 miles with a combined tank and battery, and the combustion engine can recharge the battery during travel, making it flexible to make longer journeys.

The classical wagon form is substituted by the modern design

According to Top Gear, after being plugged in, the XC70 can charge to 80 percent in only 23 minutes. It can also charge in both directions, so the car can recharge external appliances, including camping gear with the appropriate attachment, showing Volvo’s dedication to multi-purpose usage and outdoor adventure.

The XC70 comes with the latest digital technology in Volvo, with a horizontal center display of 15.4 inches, a 12.3-inch driver display, and an optional 92-inch augmented reality head-up display. Connectedness also includes the ability to share with an AI-enabled voice assistant, as well as to update via over-the-air and even to access remotely via the Volvo Cars app.

Design-wise wise the new XC70 is a clean sheet follow-up to the previous model, the more traditional wagon shape having been replaced by a tall SUV stance reminiscent of the current Volvo EVs, such as the EX90. Its closed grille with active shutters gives a nod to the electric Volvo lineup, as well as enhances aerodynamics, with sculpted bodywork, a tapered roofline, and integrated vertically mounted taillights.

Safety suite maintains legendary protection standards

Safety is one of the key components of the XC70, and Volvo supplies it with its Safe Space Technology, which uses radar, cameras, and sensors to scan the environment, prevent accidents, and help in an urban environment; the car has features such as door-opening alerts to cyclists. The package is supplemented with driver support systems like the automatic lane change assist, Park Pilot Assist, and active navigation support.

The interior is focused on space and high comfort levels, with high-quality material, spacious storage options, and a sound experience that has been acoustically managed, to keep Volvo focused on delivering a premium cabin experience to all occupants.

The reintroduction of the XC70 nameplate was a radical redesign of a rugged wagon into a sleek plug-in hybrid SUV with 124 miles of electric range, state-of-the-art safety features, and the Scandinavian style without abandoning the spirit of adventure that made the first XC70 a favorite among outdoorspeople and families that want to find a transportation alternative that is both practical and stylish.
