Walmart’s self-operated electric vehicle charging network has grown into one of the fastest-expanding public fast-charging operations in the United States, with the retail giant now running 96 open sites and another 119 under active construction, according to real-time tracking service Wattmart , as reported by Jalopnik.
Scale and equipment
Walmart uses exclusively 400-kW DC fast chargers, each with two ports, one CCS1 and one NACS (SAE J3400), for maximum compatibility. The chargers are either ABB A400 or Alpitronic HYC400, depending on location.
In recent months, ABB’s deployment has caught up with Alpitronic’s, and the two suppliers are now almost on par.
According to Adam Happel, General Manager for Retail EV Charging at Walmart , the plan is to install at least four chargers, eight stalls, per site, with locations typically running 8 to 16 stalls.
The states set to see the greatest near-term expansion are Texas with 37 new locations, Florida with 15, Illinois with 14, and North Carolina with 13.
Growth trajectory
Walmart entered the EV fast-charging market in April 2025, and has since consistently expanded its footprint.
Early milestones illustrate how quickly the company has scaled: the network surpassed 50 DC fast-charging locations , and back in May the company had over 300 individual ports at 50 stores in the U.S. Walmart then opened 12 new stations in June alone, a 20% expansion in a single month, with community-tracked data placing the network at 73 locations and 612 stalls by the end of that month.
Unlike many charging networks dependent on government grants, Walmart can fund its expansion from corporate cash flow, making it more resilient to policy changes.
That financial independence matters in the current environment, as federal funding for charger installation through the National EV Infrastructure program has faced proposed congressional cuts, putting a substantial portion of state-obligated funds in doubt.
Pricing and the competitive picture
The average charging price is about $0.48 per kWh, although rates vary by location. Some stations also offer off-peak pricing.
Walmart has started deploying chargers with credit card terminals and plans to equip all its existing and new chargers with them as an additional payment option. The Walmart app will remain a less expensive option, as the company offers a 10% discount to Walmart+ members.
On both existing and future chargers, the company plans to move the NACS connector to the left side, with CCS1 on the right , a change made to better accommodate Tesla vehicles and others with left-rear charge ports.
The push comes as EV share of U.S. new-car sales sits at 7 percent, but long-range demand assumptions still underpin Walmart’s infrastructure bet. With more than 5,200 Walmart and Sam’s Club stores across the United States, 90% of Americans live within 10 miles of a Walmart location , a geographic reach that gives the charging network a structural advantage that dedicated charging operators cannot easily replicate.
What comes next
Real-time tracking service Wattmart says Walmart currently has 96 charging sites open, with 119 more under construction. Tracker Landon West (@TheArkeTraveler on X) has identified additional sites in permitting or media reports, bringing the total of installed or known planned stations well above 400.
Walmart’s progress suggests the 100-station milestone will be achieved earlier than previously anticipated; Landon West estimates it for the end of August rather than September.
Among charging networks, Walmart trails only Tesla, a remarkable position for a retailer that launched its self-operated network little more than a year ago, according to Bloomberg.
Automakers and dealers contending with incentive costs will be watching closely: a retailer-operated public charging network at this scale could reshape where and how American EV drivers decide to stop, shop, and charge.
