Zettaset adds encryption feature to Hadoop management platform

Zettaset, which specializes in big data management technology, debuted a feature for its flagship Zettaset Orchestrator tool that offers data-at-rest encryption to customers working in Hadoop environments.

The firm said the enhancement to Orchestrator, its Hadoop cluster management platform, would be especially useful for organizations operating under strict security compliance requirements for electronic data in Hadoop environments.

Encryption is the latest in a series of security features that the firm has made to Orchestrator. It also features role-based access control and LDAP/AD integration, helping the tool fit into existing policy frameworks.

The various security features help make Orchestrator a technology that can operate as an enterprise-scale Hadoop management tool, the company said.

“Encryption is a very specialized capability, and there are few viable options available today for Hadoop users,” Zettaset CEO Jim Vogt said in a statement.

With data at rest features, the Orchestrator supports compliance rules such as HIPAA and “provides assurance that the Hadoop cluster data is protected against malicious attacks,” he said.

The feature has a negligible impact on Hadoop cluster performance, the company said, enabling Hadoop users to scale up their enterprise installments.

Ovum principal analyst Tony Baer called the encryption add-on to Orchestrator “an important step toward making data protection in Hadoop policy-driven.”

Orchestrator, which is compatible with open-source distributions, uses 256-bit AES encryption and integrates with existing key managers using the standard Key Management Interoperability Protocol.
