Beach aesthetics and peel-and-stick temporary wallpaper have emerged as top dorm-decor search categories this back-to-school season, according to trend data published on the Google Shopping blog. The Google Products and Platforms blog highlights beach vibes and temporary wallpaper as trending themes, noting that college students are eager to turn their dull dorm rooms into cozy spaces, and shares the Google Search trends behind the shift.
What students are searching for
Coastal prints, sandy palettes, and surf-inspired textiles are among the aesthetic choices pulling search volume, alongside removable, renter-friendly wall treatments that can be taken down at the end of the academic year without damaging surfaces.
According to a survey Google conducted with Apartment Therapy Media, 81% of college students are responsible for deciding their own decor purchases. The survey was conducted in 2023 among students currently enrolled in, or attending, an undergraduate college program. That autonomy translates directly into search behavior, with students independently researching products ahead of move-in day rather than relying on parents to lead the shopping.
For 77% of college students, design and aesthetics are important factors for outfitting a space, and 84% of students surveyed say it would be very or somewhat helpful to see furniture through augmented reality before buying.
Google offers AR tools within its Shopping platform to address exactly that friction point, letting shoppers visualize how a piece of furniture or wall treatment will look in their actual room before committing.
AI-powered tools shaping how students shop
Circle to Search on select Android devices lets users search for anything they see without switching apps, simply by circling, highlighting, or tapping an item to get more information, including the price and where to buy. The feature is one of several AI-assisted tools Google has embedded into its shopping experience to reduce the steps between inspiration and purchase for style-focused Gen Z shoppers.
Gen Z shoppers, especially college students, are turning to AI-powered tools that streamline decision-making and deliver hyper-personalized results. In fact, 73% of college students say they are open to using AI shopping assistants to simplify the process, according to Mintel.
Google’s built-in AI image tools sit at the center of this shift, helping students move from a visual idea spotted on social media to a shoppable product in a few taps.
A search for “shop back to school deals” now surfaces sales and discounts from different stores in one convenient spot. Google also provides price insights and historical averages for products over the past 90 days, giving budget-conscious students a clearer picture of whether a listed price represents a genuine deal.
A bigger and earlier shopping season
According to the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics, 67% of back-to-school shoppers had already begun purchasing items for the upcoming school year as of early July 2025. The NRF said the head start was up from 55% the prior year and was the highest since NRF started tracking early shopping in 2018.
Additionally, 51% of back-to-school families said they were shopping earlier specifically out of concern that prices would rise due to tariffs. Students also wanted to secure specific aesthetic items before stock ran out.
The top back-to-college spending categories are electronics, dorm or apartment furnishings, clothing and accessories, food, and personal care items. School supplies did not crack the list, reflecting that for college students this has become a season for life purchases, not just academic ones.
Those figures signal that the dorm-decor market has grown from a niche category into one of the most commercially significant segments of the entire back-to-school retail period.
Social media and the dorm-transformation trend
Social media is a significant contributor to the phenomenon, with influencer dorm tours and aesthetically curated living spaces setting both the bar and the shopping list for incoming students on platforms such as TikTok.
Extreme dorm makeovers are becoming increasingly popular, with some parents shelling out tens of thousands of dollars and hiring professional interior designers to transform their kids’ rooms. Designers have seen projects costing anywhere from $500 to $20,000. But the bulk of the search interest Google is tracking skews toward affordable, DIY-friendly solutions like peel-and-stick wallpaper and coastal decor accessories that students can source and install themselves.
Google’s data arrives as new laptops and devices also feature prominently on back-to-college shopping lists. College students and their families are expected to spend a record $103.5 billion on back-to-college shopping in 2026, surpassing $100 billion for the first time. With beach-themed decor and temporary wallpaper now clearly registering in Google’s search data, dorm aesthetics appear set to remain a defining commercial force well into the fall semester.
