Continental AG, a renowned German automotive supplier, is undergoing a significant transformation. The company has announced plans to divest its ContiTech division by 2026, marking a strategic move to concentrate exclusively on its core tire business. This decision follows the impending spin-off of its automotive group, Aumovio, scheduled for September 2025.
Divesting ContiTech to Streamline Operations
ContiTech, known for producing rubber and plastic components for various industries, including automotive, will be divested as part of Continental’s strategy to streamline operations and focus on its primary strength—tire manufacturing. The sale is expected to enhance profitability and agility in response to market volatility and the evolving automotive landscape.
CEO Nikolai Setzer emphasized the company’s new direction, stating, “For the first time in its history, Continental will become a pure-play tire manufacturer focused on value creation, profitability, cash flow, and stable business development.”
Strengthening the Tire Business
Continental’s tire sector has demonstrated stable performance, with sales of €13.9 billion ($16.3 billion) in 2024. The company anticipates future growth, particularly in North America and Asia, where the demand for replacement tires is substantial.
The tire business benefits from efficient processes, a strong customer focus, and a robust technology portfolio. With 20 tire plants globally, Continental is well-positioned to meet market demands and leverage economies of scale.
Financial Outlook and Shareholder Returns
Following the planned divestitures, Continental projects group sales in the range of €19.5 billion to €21.0 billion for fiscal 2025, with an adjusted EBIT margin of around 10.0% to 11.0%. The company also plans to increase the distribution range of net income to shareholders from 20%–40% to 40%–60%, reflecting a commitment to enhanced shareholder value.
The proceeds from the ContiTech sale are expected to support debt reduction, potential special dividends, and share buybacks, further strengthening the company’s financial position.
Embracing a Focused Future
Continental’s strategic shift to become a dedicated tire manufacturer signifies a new chapter in its long-standing history. By concentrating on its core competencies, the company aims to navigate industry challenges more effectively and capitalize on growth opportunities in the global tire market.
