A senseless, violent attack has left New York City wondering if they are safe in a manner that should have been a peaceful day for the city during its heavy snowfall during the winter months. The attack took place in the midst of heavy snowfall that engulfed the entire city, making it impossible for the victim to escape as a result of her vulnerability. The attack has raised concerns over the increase in unprovoked attacks on elderly people in the metropolitan city.
Unprovoked attack hits Brooklyn neighborhood during winter storm
A 71-year-old man was recently brutally beaten in an unprovoked attack when an assailant hit him in the face with a shovel during a snowstorm in the area of Brooklyn. The assailant approached the man quietly before attacking him and has now left the 71-year-old seriously injured. This occurred near Stryker Court & West 1st Street in the area of Gravesend at approximately 11:30 a.m. on December 27, when snow continued falling throughout the area.
Paramedics promptly rushed to the area and took the injured seventy-year-old victim to NYC Health and Hospitals/Coney Island, where he was found to be in stable condition. The perpetrator fled the scene moments after committing this heinous act and was lost in the snowy environment. The NYPD has released video footage of the assailant in an attempt to identify and bring this cowardly assailant to justice.
Investigations are still ongoing, with the suspect still on the loose
The police are actively pursuing a lead on this disturbing case of random violence against an elder member of society. The New York Police Department has released pictures taken by surveillance cameras of the assailant, hopefully to aid society in recognizing the assailant and providing law enforcement with crucial information for putting this culprit behind bars and preventing other violent acts against members of society.
It’s but one of the incidents targeting the defenseless members of the community in the five boroughs of the city of New York. This type of act has steadily increased because of the concerns of the community members for their safety as they go about their chores. An increase in the number of security forces should be employed in areas hosting the elderly as they walk or conduct their business.
Authorities have created some ways in which members of society can come forth with information about this matter:

One factor that could be identified here is the weather
The fact that the assault occurred during a severe snowstorm also raises issues about how the conditions of the weather might have provided an opportunity for the commission of the crime. Heavy snow can lead to conditions of reduced visibility, as well as fewer witnesses around because of the adverse weather conditions, making the elderly especially susceptible to assault. The accumulation of the snow also makes escape rather difficult for the elderly.
The adverse weather conditions prevalent that day had also made it slippery for people to walk outside in Brooklyn, causing most residents to remain in their homes. This may have encouraged the attacker, who probably estimated that there would be fewer people present to witness what was happening. The impact of the weather is still being explored in the inquiry into this horrific incident.
This random act of violence perpetrated against a senior in a snowstorm is an especially reprehensible act that has been an ever-increasing problem for New Yorkers in terms of public safety. The fact that a senior was victimized, it was a random act of violence, and it took place in broad daylight in a snowstorm, illustrates why measures for securing greater levels of public safety are imperative.
