OnePlus launched its newest flagship phone, the OnePlus 16, in China this week, built around Qualcomm’s just announced Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chipset manufactured on a 2nm process. The phone is exclusive to China, since OnePlus announced its exit from Europe and the US earlier this year, which means the OnePlus 15 was its last flagship device in these markets.

The device is aimed squarely at mobile gamers and power users, with no official plans so far for a broader international release.

A gaming focused flagship

On October 12, 2026, OnePlus launched the OnePlus 16, a new flagship Android smartphone, in China only , prioritizing raw gaming performance.

It is powered by the 2nm-class Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 octa-core processor, paired with up to 16GB RAM and 1TB storage, while the base version comes with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage .

The jump to a 2nm manufacturing process marks one of the most significant chip upgrades in Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon lineup this year. According to GSMArena’s full specifications listing, the chip carries model number SM8975 and is paired with the Adreno 850 GPU.

OnePlus has positioned the device as a successor built for sustained high frame rate gaming and demanding multitasking, a theme that has defined its flagship line in recent years. Native 185FPS support in selected games, an updated gaming kernel and three dedicated gaming chips give the phone a clear focus on competitive mobile gaming.

The company’s official specifications confirm the chipset pairing with high memory and storage tiers, a configuration typically reserved for enthusiast buyers willing to pay a premium for top end performance. In China, the base 12/256GB trim starts at CNY 5,999 ($896), while the top-tier 16GB and 1TB storage version is CNY 8,499 ($1,270). Open sales in China start on October 31.

Rollout details

Open sales in China start on October 31. OnePlus has not announced international pricing or an overseas release date for the OnePlus 16.

The OnePlus 16 arrives as part of a broader wave of autumn smartphone launches. Apple unveiled its iPhone 18 Pro lineup in September, and a separate first foldable model from the company is also expected this fall, according to earlier reporting from Apple watchers. The October 2026 smartphone calendar has otherwise shifted to a mix of mid-range disruptors and high end flagships.

OnePlus is betting that a focused, performance first flagship can stand out against that crowded backdrop, even without a presence in Western markets.

Competition from rival chipmakers

The launch also highlights the widening divide between Qualcomm and MediaTek powered flagships heading into 2027.

Rival Oppo is preparing its own Hasselblad branded Find X10 series for a global debut later this month. The Oppo Find X10 and Find X10 Pro Max will launch globally on October 21 at an event taking place in Mallorca, Spain.

That Hasselblad branded flagship series heavily emphasizes imaging and battery endurance. The Oppo Find X10 gets a 6.59-inch display, the Dimensity 9600M chipset, and dual 200MP rear cameras along with a 50MP ultrawide unit, while the Find X10 Pro Max has a triple 200MP rear camera setup, the Dimensity 9600 Pro chipset, and sports a 6.78-inch display. It also gets an 8,000mAh battery. Find X10 Series also features the latest ColorOS 17 . The Find X10 Pro Max is what Oppo calls the industry’s first triple 200MP camera setup, with 200 MP sensors for its main, ultrawide and telephoto cameras, while the standard Find X10 runs on the Dimensity 9600M and the Pro Max runs on the 2nm Dimensity 9600 Pro.

That contrast, raw processing speed from OnePlus versus imaging and battery capacity from Oppo, reflects how flagship Android makers are increasingly differentiating around specific use cases rather than competing on identical spec sheets.

Chip suppliers are following a similar pattern, pushing smaller process nodes into phones faster than in past years as manufacturers chase both performance headlines and battery efficiency gains, a dynamic also visible in recent laptop chip redesigns from Intel’s new power wiring approach.

What comes next

OnePlus has not yet detailed international pricing or a release date for markets outside China. With OnePlus having withdrawn from Europe and the US earlier this year, it remains unclear whether the OnePlus 16 will reach those markets at all.

The timing also lands as major platform holders push more on-device intelligence into flagship hardware, a trend that has reshaped how chipmakers like Qualcomm design their newest silicon.

That broader software push mirrors moves elsewhere in the industry, including Google’s own expansion of AI tools into everyday products such as its Gemini powered classroom tools.

For OnePlus, the immediate test will be whether its gaming first flagship can convert strong benchmark numbers into retail demand once broader sales begin in China on October 31.
