SAP has announced its most extensive European project for digital sovereignty yet with the launch of the European Union AI Cloud. This is a one-stop solution that will provide European firms with the much-needed cloud independence from America’s hyperscale companies. This move is the culmination of SAP’s investment of €20 billion in cloud solutions that will see Europe take leadership in terms of digital sovereignty.
European organizations achieve complete control over AI infrastructure
SAP’s EU AI Cloud provides unprecedented control over data, infrastructure, and AI applications via multiple deployment models designed for different organizational requirements. SAP’s cloud solution helps European companies and public sector organizations effectively utilize the most advanced AI capabilities with uninterrupted compliance with European regulations on protecting data. Depending on their own security requirements, organizations can choose deployment models via SAP’s own infrastructure, that of their European trusted infrastructure partners, or a completely managed on-site solution.
The tool is tackling the aspect of residency as well as compliance, since the AI models will run on the SAP software abstraction layer within European data centers. Such models do not require any reliance on US hyperscalers. However, the models will allow European companies to remain within the latest innovations of AI technologies developed by top partners such as Cohere, Mistral AI, as well as others such as OpenAI.
Cohere North integration expands agentic AI capabilities
SAP and Cohere will come together with a focus on providing cutting-edge agentic AI capabilities via Cohere North, further extending its existing capabilities for multimodal AI within the European AI Cloud. Cohere North will be directly integrated with SAP’s Business Technology Platform, SAP BTP, so that organizations with rigid requirements for data residency can use Cohere North’s capabilities in their production-ready applications. This will open the door for enhanced insights, better decision support, and automated intelligence within their complex business processes with European sovereignty.
Deployment models can adapt to different security requirements
The EU AI Cloud provides flexible deployment solutions via SAP Sovereign Cloud. This gives their clientele intricate control over infrastructure, platforms, and software, depending on their regulatory compliance requirements. Indeed, the system supports four different models of deployment that cater to their desired levels of security. However, this still ensures that their cloud innovation evolves from SAP’s technology.
- SAP Sovereign Cloud on SAP Cloud Infrastructure (EU): An infrastructure cloud service built with open source technologies, running on SAP’s European infrastructure network, with all data being stored within the European Union.
- SAP Sovereign Cloud On Site: SAP-managed infrastructure in their own customer-owned or customer-chosen data centers, offering maximum data, business, technology, and legal sovereignty.
- Selected hyperscalers per market: SAP Customer CM provides commercial SAP SaaS deployment with sovereignty capabilities as required by the specific markets.
- Delos Cloud: A secure cloud solution designed not only for the transformation in Germany’s public sector but also for sovereignty issues.
Strategic partnerships enhance the European AI ecosystem
The EU AI Cloud utilizes a growing list of world-class European and global partners in its ecosystem. By integrating the most sophisticated models of AI applications from strategic partners directly into SAP BTP, the solution therefore delivers a full chain for the development, deployment, as well as scaling of applications powered through AI. This service can be availed as Software as a Service, Platform as a Service, or Infrastructure as a Service solutions through SAP’s infrastructure, as well as trusted European Partner Infrastructures.
SAP’s European Union AI Cloud marks a critical point in the pursuit of digital sovereignty by Europe, providing organizations with the solutions that allow them flexibility to unlock the transformative powers of AI without sacrificing their sovereignty. With its well-rounded strategic focus on managing residency, regulatory aspects, and technological advancements, European businesses will be better positioned to compete effectively in the realm of digital globality.
