Aldi, one of America’s retailers, made the news when it was discovered what the company does with its unsold products. As we all know, food prices are continuously on the rise as living standards increase, and the question for many company owners may be, what do we do with the leftover products that have not been old? Although this process may not be what the consumers expected, the company still had to decide.
Aldi’s solution to address food waste
There is much more to appreciate about Aldi than its affordable prices and endless ways to save money. The retailer is seriously focused on addressing the food waste problem and therefore the company partnered with Feeding America, to ensure the best possible solutions are found for the leftover food supplies.
It is also important to note that the retailer does not just focus on one solution to address the problem of food waste. However, there are various ways Aldi goes about wanting to address the food waste problem. There is definitely no problem for to donate food, however, some of the food may not be able to be in a state to be donated. Some of these food items may have issues like being spoiled.
Fortunately, the retailer has a plan for these specific items as well. These inedible foodstuffs at the various stores are contributed to organic recycling programs. In addition, this process consists of changing organic waste into usable items, that will result in things like animal feed and compost for plants. Despite the fact that these programs are only established in selected Aldi locations, the retailer was able to recycle more than 1.9 million pounds of food waste in 2021.
How this the programme work?
The donation program of Aldi is central to the company’s mission. The retailer provides “unsaleable products still safe for consumption” to local food banks and this is to ensure that individuals and families in need, have access to food at no cost. The company does not specifically specify what it means when it refers to unsaleable products.
However, that generally means that the products have reach their sell-by date, or it can be items with damaged packaging, as well as products that has been discontinued. This is an amazing opportunity for Aldi to work with Feeding America, because it operates in more than 200 food banks throughout the United States. This opportunity allows Aldi to fulfil the company’s mission through donate the food that might go to waste to the less fortunate.
Aldi: Making a difference in America
A few years ago, in 2023, it was found that 47.4 million Americans lived in households that lack sufficient access to nutrient-rich and affordable food sources. It is also important to highlight the Food insecurity in the United States, and the fact that it may even become more pronounced when referring to the increasingly expensive grocery items like coffee and beef. This is likely due to President Donald Trump’s plan to enact tariffs on imported products.
Moreover, Aldi was designated as a Visionary Partner (VP) for Feeding America; this was an honour for the retailer because this spot is generally reserved for donors who has met a minimum contribution limit. For an initiative to be considered a VP, they should provide the Feeding America with a minimum of 40 million pounds of food. Organisations could also make a financial donation of $4 million (this can either be a combined donation of 20 million pounds of food and $2 million).
Also, Aldi supports Feeding America in its disaster relief work, and it sent out around 30,000 boxes of food in 2024. In this one year of assisting the company, Aldi has raised this alone to help those experiencing emergencies and natural disasters. Aldi is looking at some massive changes for 2025. This includes the fact that the company is leaning towards using recyclable, reusable, and compostable packaging exclusively. This shows the retailers continued commitment to making a positive impact.
