The pharmacy retail industry in America is on a continuous rise. The reason for this is that various retailers started growing their pharmacy sections within their stores. These retailers include some of America’s largest retail giants, like Walmart. The retailer is making moves to grow its Pharmacy department as American pharmacies are dying.
Details about the pharmacy
At this point, Walmart can be named as an already established leader of the American pharmacy industry. The retailer has been continuing to expand its operations, and the company is planning to increase consumer accessibility to affordable and convenient healthcare services.
The retailer made a statement by saying that, “Walmart has over 45 years of experience providing quality care through pharmacy. We’re confident in our people-led, tech-powered approach. We’re committed to investing in the tools and resources our pharmacists need to provide care and build relationships, not just count pills.”
There are over 4,000 Walmart pharmacies across the country. These pharmacies provide prescription medication and wellness products to millions of Americans, which are often at inexpensive or competitive prices. Providing access to affordable drugs and medication is becoming increasingly more important to Americans.
The reason for this is because the costs of prescription drugs soar, especially when looking at GLP-1 drugs, such as Ozempic and Wegovy. In addition, the expanding role of pharmacists, such as testing and providing care for illnesses like strep, flu and COVID, may also assist when it comes to the shift of some of the burden off primary care providers.
Walmart is going bigger in the pharmacy department
In May this year, Walmart opened its biggest centralized prescription processing facility to date. This facility was opened in Frederick, Maryland and it can complete up to 100,000 prescriptions a day and support more than 700 stores in 16 states and Washington, D.C.
In addition, Walmart is hoping that the company’s Central Fill network, a centralized prescription fulfilment system, will provide coverage to about 90% of its pharmacies. The goal is to achieve this by the end of 2026 in order to meet growing consumer demand.
This specific Central Fill operations have an aim to simplify the refill process. This will be done by using advanced technology to carry out various processes in order to free up pharmacists for consumer care. Since, we live in a more digital era, Walmart also have a delivering prescriptions and general merchandise with same-day delivery. This is a service which was made available in 49 states at the end of January this year.
Walmart told Newsweek that, “These efficiencies create more time for our pharmacy teams in stores, which allows opportunities to better connect with patients, with more time back in their day, pharmacists can work at the top of their license to provide clinical services and help improve health outcomes.”
The public’s opinion
Walmart’s senior vice president of the Pharmacy, Kevin Host, made a statement last Monday. He said that the retailer is continuing to unlock new levels that would make it convenient for consumers. Although the retailer is focused on convenience, it also aims to broaden the Pharmacy’s access to critical medication.
He stated that the retailer is planning on adding refrigerated prescriptions to their Pharmacy Delivery capabilities. The reason for this is that the retailer is listening to their consumers. Host further alluded to the fact that Walmart is always looking at ways in which they can create better, seamless experiences, and maintaining the communities they serve is at the heart of what they do.
In addition, Walmart has two extra centralized prescription processing facilities in development. One of these facilities will be in Phoenix, Arizona, and the other one will be situated in Republic, Missouri. The retailer is expecting that these facilities will be operational in 2026, which highlights the further expansion of its Central Fill network.
