One of the most iconic American drugstores is closing its doors. Sadly, Rite Aid has issued a confirmation that it will be closing all of their stores after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
For more than 6 decades, Rite Aid has been the one stop for millions of Americans, from purchasing of health products, to prescription medication and your everyday essentials. Unfortunately, the store is closing down completely.
Why Rite Aid Is Closing
Many may ask, why is the store closing? Well, the problems started many years ago. In the year 2023, Rite Aid made the first application for bankruptcy. This led to the closure of approximately 800 stores to decrease costs. Back then, the aim was to reorganize and survive.
Sadly for Rite Aid, the situation did not get better. There had been lesser people coming to shop in store and debt continued to increase. The competition from other stores kept growing. Fast forward to May 2025, Rite Aid filed for bankruptcy again. Even worse, this time there was no plan for recovery, but the rather the closure of its remaining stores.
How Many Stores Are Closing?
So the question is, how many stores are closing? Earlier this year, when Rite Aid filed for bankruptcy, there were approximately 1,240 stores left. That number has since increased to 1,274 closures as the company filed multiple notices in court.
On August 15, 2025, Rite Aid announced yet another round of closures, 13 more stores across five states:
- Washington (8)
- New Hampshire (2)
- Idaho (1)
- New York (1)
- Oregon (1)
At this point, almost every Rite Aid store in the country is being shut down.
States Losing the Most Stores
While Rite Aid is closing everywhere, some states are seeing far bigger impacts. The hardest-hit states include:
- California: 348 stores
- Pennsylvania: 354 stores
- New York: 179 stores
- Washington: 128 stores
- New Jersey: 61 stores
- New Hampshire: 49 stores
- Oregon: 40 stores
Many other states, including Maryland, Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, and Virginia, are also losing many of the stores.
What It Means for Workers and Shoppers
As much as there are many customers who are feeling the impact of this, there are also thousands of employees who are absolutely devastated. Many of these employees have worked in these stores for years.
For customers, Rite Aid has been available in many small towns making easier for people to access medication etc. The closure of the stores will make it difficult for people, especially the elderly population to access medication.
Other Chains Closing Too
Rite Aid isn’t alone. The entire pharmacy industry is shrinking:
- CVS has already closed hundreds of stores since 2022 and plans to shut down over 1,100 locations by the end of 2025.
- Walgreens is closing 1,200 stores over the next three years, with 500 shutting in 2025 alone.
What Customers Should Do
For those customers who still have prescriptions at Rite Aid, the company is transferring them to other pharmacies so that customers are not inconvenienced.
Sadly, the rewards system and gift cards will fall away when the stores close. Best thing for customers is to use these as soon as possible.
The End of a Neighbourhood Favourite
People have relied on quick stops for many years and the closure of these stores will definitely impact them negatively. Customers are urged to find alternative stores that will cover what they look for in Rite Aid.
The closure of Rite Aid reminds us that the retail landscape is evolving day by day and suddenly, our favourite, reliable stores, can disappear. Be sure to keep updated so that you are aware of the store closure in your area!
