One of America’s retailers, Big Lots, is expected to reopen several stores nationwide. It is a discount retail chain that has a key focus on the sale of closeouts and overstock merchandise. These stores now operate under new management after it was classified as bankrupt earlier this year. It seems that the new management addressed the bankruptcy process that occurred in early 2025. Now, the stores are ready to reopen, and consumers can expect to see a Big Lots store opening near them. See the list of where Big Lots stores are expected to open, who knows, maybe it is near you!
The story behind Big Lots
Earlier this year, Big Lots closed a previously announced sale agreement with Gordon Brothers Retail Partners. As part of the deal, Variety Wholesalers was set to acquire 200 to 400 Big Lots stores, which would retain the Big Lots branding and two distribution centers. The president and CEO of Variety Wholesalers, Lisa Seigies, made an announcement on Friday during a press release. She indicated that they are thrilled and excited to bring back the Big Lots brand. To help bring it back to life they are willing to offer more deals than previously.
In addition, this will include more famous brands and a new apparel department for the entire family. She also indicated that while stores are opening quickly to serve their respective communities, the stores will not be perfect when they open and start being operative. She continues by saying that they want consumers to always find something new and exciting every time they visit Big Lots. Seigies alluded to the fact that more new products will be added each week, as they are building Big Lots towards its grand opening celebration in the fall.
Where the stores are located
It is important to note where these stores are located. It has been stated that nine of these stores across six different states are set to reopen on Thursday, April 10. Below is a list of the stores that will reopen soon
- Kentucky: Mount Sterling (1342 Indian Mound Drive)
- Louisiana: Metairie (755 Veterans Memorial Boulevard)
- Mississippi: Tupelo (2605 W Main Street) and Pearl (5778 Highway 80 E)
- North Carolina: Asheboro (1432 E Dixie Drive)
- Tennessee: Clarksville (1041 S Riverside Drive), Gallatin (744 Nashville Pike), and Dickson (220 Dickson Plaza Drive)
- Virginia: Roanoke (2911 Hershberger Road NW)
In addition, it should be noted that there are other specific locations that were not shared as part of the above list, but these stores are also planning on opening in these locations. Variety Wholesalers said Big Lots stores are reopening in the following locations as well, but it was not publicly announced like the other stores in the 6 states. But consumers can expect to see Big Lots stores in these locations that are specified on the list below:
- Alabama,
- Florida,
- Georgia,
- Michigan,
- North Carolina,
- Ohio,
- Pennsylvania,
- South Carolina,
- West Virginia, and “other states.”
Additional store openings
Moreover, Ocean State Job Lot, the discount retailer, made an announcement that it was preparing to acquire 15 former Big Lots stores in Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont. Also, Ollie’s Bargain Market acquired more than three dozen Big Lots store leases. It is also important to note that there is no clear communication as to when these new stores may open.
In addition, the stores opening that will occur during this week are the first of four planned reopening waves of the retailer. The second wave, is aiming to include 55 stores, is slated to open on May 1. Remaining stores, according to Variety Wholesalers, are expected to open “through early June” with a grand opening celebration scheduled for fall. All this because the chain experiences massive stores closures over the past few months/years.
