Christmas is coming to Costco — 5 top-festive items in the “What’s New?” aisle

One of America’s top retailers, Costco, is making headlines with its plan to open a large new store. For many people in this new location where the retailer will operate, this will be an exciting opportunity to get the Costco experience. It will be built on the graves of two retail giants that used to be. This large warehouse club obtained its final approval to take over the shuttered Kmart and Stop & Shop location.

The details behind the takeover

Costco is a well-known membership warehouse club, loved for the retailer’s wide selection of products, which is often sold in bulk. What makes this store even more amazing is that the bulk products it sells, or even the products in general at the club, are available at low prices.

The retailer is a brilliant leader when it comes to consumer satisfaction. It has a high score of 82 on the American Customer Satisfaction Index. According to the town’s mayor the retail giant will officially be coming to Route 17 South in Paramus; he confirmed this on Friday.

In addition, the Paramus Planning Board approved a bid on Thursday evening for Costco to build a 184,000-square-foot location. This was reported by NorthJersey.com, that the location will be at the shuttered Kmart and Stop & Shop locations at 859 Route 17 South. In a statement that was shared on social media on Friday, the Paramus Mayor Chris DiPiazza welcomed this news.

Information on the New Costco Location

The Paramus Mayor Chris DiPiazza made a Facebook post where he stated that Costco is a premier in the United States. He further alluded to the fact that they are choosing to call Paramus home, therefore, it can be stated that he is excited about this new opportunity for the locals to have the Costco experience.

Something else that he mentioned was that “They are filling an abandoned property – a vacant lot – and putting in a need. We can’t ask for much more than that. They’re keeping our commercial corridor vibrant, which helps the taxpayers, and they’re doing so with a plan to protect residents that are their neighbors as well.”

In addition, the new Costco location will be the store’s 21st location in New Jersey. It will also join other North Jersey locations such as:

  • Teterboro,
  • Clifton and
  • Wayne.

Approval of this process

The new Costco store was approved with unanimous consent during the October 2, 2025, meeting. According to NorthJersey.com. this occurred after some of the local residents voiced concerns about added traffic. There was no time frame discussed at that point pertaining to the construction of the new Costco.

Also, it is important to note that the approval comes more than a year after DiPiazza made an announcement about Costco’s plans to bid on the vacant lots. These vacant locations were once occupied by a Kmart and Stop & Shop stores. The Kmart location in Paramus has been closed since 2014, meaning that it has been closed for more than a decade now. On the other hand, the Stop & Shop store closed in January 2022.
