Christmas is coming to Costco — 5 top-festive items in the “What’s New?” aisle

One of America’s retail giants, Costco, made news headlines because of the company’s new policy. It has been found that the retailer’s policy resulted in the creation of two classes of consumers. The date for the operation of the new executive policy was set for August 31, 2025. This, after a grace period has been provided for everyone to get used to the new policy.

The details about the new policy

Costco implemented a new ‘executive’ policy that was set to be active on August 31, 2025. This is the date when the ‘grace period’ came to an end. Both the consumers and workers had a lot to say about this new change that the company implemented. It has been stated that Costco’s consumers can expect to see the warehouse club’s new store policy officially take effect in just days, on Sunday, August 31, as the grace period ends.

Once the chain rolls out the new rule, extending its operating hours for those who fall under the Executive members group, consumers of all membership levels will be affected. It has been stated that Costco’s Executive members are the company’s highest-paying consumers.

They comprise of about 73% of the company’s sales although this group makes up less than 50% of the retailer’s 79.6 million members, as indicated by the company’s data. In addition, the Executive membership runs consumers $130 annually, this is double the price of the $65 standard Gold Star membership.

Moreover, when it comes to bumping up the value of the premium membership, Costco made a controversial change to its store policy. The retail giant made the big decision to extend its operating hours solely for these consumers, which started on June 30.

The reason behind Costco’s new rule

The retailer made a statement to Business Insider, and it said that the executive members are the company’s most loyal members. The retailer further alluded to the fact that the aim with this change is to reward these members for their commitment to Costco.

In addition, this new rule meant that Executive consumers were allowed to enter Costco stores an hour earlier than everyone else on weekdays and Sundays. The special operating time set out for this is from 9 am to 10 am, as well as 30 minutes early on Saturdays, which is from 9 am to 9:30 am. Additional to the Executive members change which started on July 30, Costco extended its store hours by an hour on Saturdays. This means that the stores will close at 7 pm for all consumers

Before the store change was implemented at the end of August 2025, Costco forewarned guests with signs out front that not only outlined the new hours but also informed consumers of a grace period. One of the signs that were placed outside read, “A grace period for Gold Star and Business members will be in effect through August 31.” This grace period allowed extra time to help ease the transition.

The feedback from the public

When this announcement was made by Costco, the fact that it plans to change the hours in stores, both consumers and employees expressed their unhappiness about this. Additionally, the retailer’s hours extension for Executive members now matches that of Sam’s Club. This chain has long offered early store access for Plus members. However, Coscot’s consumer were not impressed by this.

One of the members complained in Facebook, stating that Costco is coping everything that Sam’s Club is doing. Another member supported this statement by adding that this new change is basically Sam’s Club. Other Facebook users argued that Costco’s new rule is too exclusionary. One fumed consumer stated, “Why does Costco act like it’s a hot exclusive night club? I’ll stick with BJ’s.”

A second wrote that Costco’s treatment when it comes to non-Executive members are “peasants.” Other members claimed that the new hours would likely result in an issue especially when it comes to the elderly consumers. These are people without an Executive membership who would wait in front of the store until it opens.
